  Turner
Turner's use of watercolour in his travel sketches facilitated the emergence of his landscape studies, these early works of topographical watercolour allowed him to develop his innovative handling of the medium.
When he applied these watercolour techniques to his oils, they showed influences of the use of freedom of techniques, the observation of light effects and the portrayal of sublimity, which fostered new developments in the landscape genre.
Turner's watercolour stimulated the emergence of landscape by transferring the raw material - the land into an art form and it was the application of the methods as well as the subject repertory of watercolour to oil painting which led to some of the most original elements in Turner's style.

Watercolour came into regular use in England around the end of the 17th century, some two hundred years after Dürer's pioneering work with this medium.
It was in the last third of the 18th century that watercolour established itself as the preferred technique for what had become a veritable craze: landscape views, whether conceived as an accurate topographical record, a travelogue of picturesque scenery, or more fanciful compositions of romantic features such as ruins and rural genre subjects.
The British school of watercolour painting as we know it, was not firmly established until the middle of the eighteenth century.

Watercolour Paintings, English Watercolours, History of Watercolour Painting
Watercolour painting can be defined as a painting technique using various pigments soluble in water with the addition of gum to bond the pigment to the paper.
Later in 18th century England Paul Sandby (1725-1809) was called the ‘father of English watercolour and his success in the medium was reflected by the fact that he created half of the watercolours of his time.
Constable used watercolour to capture a moment of time - an atmospheric moment—a rainbow, cloud, reflection on water and any other information he could use to paint his larger oil paintings.
