Waterfront Station was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway and was the Pacific terminus for the CPR's transcontinental passenger trains to Montréal and Toronto until circa 1979, when VIA Rail took over the railway's passenger operations and rerouted trains to Union Station (now called Pacific Central Station) near False Creek.
Waterfront Station is the home of the first Starbucks outlet in Vancouver, which opened in the 1987 and was one of the first Starbucks locations outside of Seattle, Washington.
Waterfront station is connected to the Waterfront Hotel and Canada Place by underground passage.

Fire administrators say no decisions have been made about the fate of Fire Station 3, Everett's waterfront station, that keeping fire units on the waterfront still is an option and that the differing views are nothing new.

The two lines follow a common route between Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver and Columbia Station in New Westminster, serving the cities of Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster en route.
The line will run from Waterfront Station through a tunnel under Downtown and much of the city of Vancouver, then surface and cross the Fraser River, continuing to Richmond City Centre.
During the Expo and afterwards it was extended, first to Columbia Station, then across the Fraser River to Scott Road once the Skybridge was finished, then the final mid-1990's extension to King George Station in Central Surrey.

During Expo 86, special shuttle trains ran from a third track at Stadium-Chinatown Station (where there was a connection to the monorail serving the main site of the world's fair) to the Canadian pavilion at Waterfront Station.
The Expo Line travels underground from Waterfront to Stadium Stations, mainly through the Dunsmuir Tunnel, a tunnel previously used by the Canadian Pacific Railway to connect its mainline tracks along Burrard Inlet to its former yard on False Creek.
From just west of Nanaimo Station all the way to New Westminster station, the Expo Line follows BC Electric's former Central Park Line, which carried interurbans between Vancouver and New Westminster from 1890 to the early 1950s.
