The Waterhouses also asked that a further seven charges levelled against them for betting back with bookmakers "when such a bet was not placed for the express purpose of reducing the liability" be withdrawn.

Robbie Waterhouse was charged with 11 breaches of the telephone betting conditions of the Totalizator Act while his son Tom faced 16.
The other five charges against Robbie Waterhouse and the two against Tom Waterhouse relate to bets placed by telephone with other bookmakers which were not placed for the express purpose of reducing the liability of bets already laid on certain horses.

In both the Dictionary of National Biography article on bishop Samuel Hallifax and in "The Worthies of Barnsley" on his cousin the banker Sir Thomas Hallifax it says that their family came from Halifax, West Yorks and that their name had originally been Waterhouse.
So far I have not managed to find confirmation of this descent but I have found quite a bit about their ancestors and about the Waterhouses of Halifax from whom they claim descent.
