  Waterloo, Belgium
The little town of Waterloo in Brabant, 18km/11miles south of Brussels, has become world famous through the historic battle of June 18, 1815.
While the British general Wellington spoke of the "Battle of Waterloo", to the Prussian field marshal it was the "Battle of Belle-Alliance" since both generals met after the successful victory at the farm of this name.
In order to confront the allies, who were advancing towards France, the French army made a forced march to the north where on July 16, 1815 they defeated the Prussians at Ligny and Marshal Ney did battle with the British.

Waterloo, once it was over, put an end to twenty-two years of French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and led to a century of relative peace and progress in Europe.
At Waterloo, the honor of bold, lavish uniforms and, at least initially, the aesthetic beauty of battle were still intact.
Authoritative and engrossing, Waterloo is a brilliant portrait of a legendary turning point in modern history, after which the balance of world power, the legend of Napoleon, and the art of war were never the same.

Waterloo soon composed and rehearsed six original songs, which they played on 6 November 1969 to Wallace Collection's producer Jean Martin, whom the Bilzen festival manager Paul Andre had convinced to attend one of their rehearsals.
Thus, Waterloo made their stage debut at the beginning of December 1969, alongside Michel Polnareff, returning soon to the same concert hall, from 17th to 20th December, together with another Belgian group in the vein of Wallace Collection, Modus Vivendis, Belgian variety singer Jacques Hustin and Wallace Collection themselves.
Waterloo were also regular visitors to France's major venues, playing several times at the famous Gibus club in Paris, for example from 3rd to 7th March, 1971, alas without John who had injured his hand.

This summary narrative supplies basic data about Waterloo and evaluates mistakes by both Wellington and Napoleon that make the historic battle one of the most worked-over topics for speculation in military history.
Roberts' original contribution to historical contingency--for such an exhaustively studied battle, his research, amazingly enough, turned up new evidence--is that a cavalry charge by Marshal Ney, possibly the gravest error the French made during the battle, was a spontaneous assault rather than an intended one.
Smoothly integrating the what-ifs into the chronology, Roberts joins the essential facts about Waterloo, such as its area and relief, to the morale of individual units involved.

Drawing on previously unpublished accounts, Hofschroer gives not only the Prussian perspective of their march to Waterloo and decisive attack on Napoleon's flank, but also details of the actions fought by some of the 25,000 Germans in Wellington's 'British' army - more than a third of the Duke's force.
This volume, part two in a series on the Prussian (German) view of Waterloo, is an excellent historical study that covers much material that has sat in German archives for much too long.
Hofschroer does not claim that the Prussians won at Waterloo, or won alone the War of 1815, but that 3/4 of the victors were German speaking folks.
