At that, however, Watermelon Man is not nearly as respected now as Sweet Sweetback because of what Sweet Sweetback represents, both ideologically and influentially in the film industry.
Yet, Watermelon Man is just as unique and important in what it has to say about race, even if it's not violent or pornographic, and not bizarre in the same way.
Equally bizarre and a bit disturbing is Cambridge's make-up as a white man.

  The Foody - Watermelon Man
In picking a good watermelon, Egyptians treat watermelon like pets; they will pat them, talk to them, others poke them and feel them, look for a big yellow spots on the bottom, or some will go to the extreme and carry them on their foreheads and listen to them.
Watermelons are 95% water, so once the watermelon growers let the water run freely in the field 95% of their work is done; all they need to do is to work a little harder on the other 5%.
To get a good tasty watermelon I was told you need a climate that is very hot and dry, the soil has to be sandy clay, the irrigation has to be precise and timely and the pollination has to be completed when the melons’ flowers are blooming and apparently in a good mood.

This is the premise for Melvin Van Peebles' 1970 classic Watermelon Man. The film stars the late legendary comedian Godfrey Cambridge as Jeff Gerber, a solid middle class white insurance salesman who has a penchant for exercise, racist jokes, and ironically a tanning bed.
Watermelon Man offers an interesting insight not only to racism in America but to the nuances of human nature as well.
Although Watermelon Man was not the first film to deal with racism, it was still revolutionary in how it dealt with the issue of the privilege that comes along with white skin in our society.

 DVDFanatic Review: Watermelon Man
Those among the 25 and older crowd seeing director Melvin Van Peebles’ second film, Watermelon Man, for the first time may be reminded of the abysmal (and overtly racist) Soul Man, in which a suburban, rich white kid poses as an African-American in order to ensure his acceptance into Harvard Law School.
Watermelon Man opens with a glimpse into a day in the life of the Gerber family.

Office Naps: "Watermelon Man" & derivations
It was the young Herbie Hancock himself - all of twenty-two years old and fresh from Takin’ Off, his debut album on Blue Note Records - who introduced his composition “Watermelon Man” (hear an excerpt here) to the Cuban-born conguero and bandleader Mongo Santamaria one slow, fateful night in 1962.
Under Santamaria’s stewardship, “Watermelon Man” (hear an excerpt here) took the elegantly vamping rhythm of Hancock’s Latin blues and beat it into the infectious shape that would soon formalize as Nuyorican boogaloo.
“Watermelon Man” was atypical, too, as it was composed by a brilliant, conservatory-trained jazz pianist and rendered by a master Cuban percussionist categorically older than the Nuyoricans who championed the boogaloo.

Watermelon Man grows bleaker as it progresses, pushed by Van Peebles' unhinged score, which asserts his personality and sensibility as strongly as his direction.
The film answers that question, arguing persuasively that racism and injustice are as American in their own way as any of the country's nobler values.

Penned by piano phenom Hancock, “Watermelon Man” first became a hit when Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria recorded a Latinized version of Herbie’s tune in 1962, igniting the boogaloo craze of the 1960s.
Head Hunters’ re-arrangement of “Watermelon Man” saw the band chop the original tempo almost in half and funkify it with a 16th-note groove.

In 1963 Herbie Hancock's tune 'Watermelon Man', which incidentally had been previously released on his first 'Blue Note' album 'Takin' Off', was a pop Latin jazz hit for Mongo Santamaria.
But then all of a sudden Donald Byrd says, 'Herbie, why don't play Watermelon Man for Mongo?', and I'm thinking, 'What does that have to do with the conversation that they're talking about?' I thought it was a little funky jazz tune.
And I was used to listening to orchestras, because I had done that as a kid, and also arranged for a big band when I was at college, and I had touched on those elements in my records on 'Blue Note', things like 'The Prisoner' and 'Speak like a child'.

"Watermelon Man" was the most successful of these re-recordings, probably because of its pop history, but also because the piece lent itself to the new fusion style.
