Watermill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A watermill is a structure that uses a water wheel or turbine to drive a mechanical process such as flour or lumber production.
The technology behind the watermill is somewhat older than that of the windmill.
Typically, water is diverted from a river or impoundment or mill pond to a turbine or water wheel, along a channel or pipe (variously known as a flume, head race, mill race, leat, or leet).

Sussex Watermills : Sussex Mills Group
The building of the watermill is a brick substructure on which is supported a timber framed and weatherboarded superstructure with a half hipped roof covered with clay tiles.
This tall watermill had two wooden waterwheels, one overshot and one breastshot and each worked 2 pairs of stones, although the gearing arrangement was such that either set of stones could be worked by each waterwheel.
Cox's Watermill is located within the parish of Burwash and appears to have been built at the end of the 18th century.

The older of the two watermills (known in later years locally as the Little Mill) was powered by a 12ft diameter wheel driving 3-pairs of stones.

 Watermill - Gigolo
After playing this week at the Watermill, Ade Morris’s merrily written, brightly acted comedy sets off on a six-week tour of the village halls and small theatres of the Thames Valley, punctuated by a few trips further afield to larger houses.
The plot starts to follow a formula towards the end, with everyone’s hearts turning out to be in the right place after all, but Morris steers clear of a sentimental ending, and even if he hadn’t, one could forgive him because of the humour and his lovingly jaundiced nostalgia for Stoke-on-Trent.
John Doyle's imaginative, stripped-down versions of classic musicals, with the casts doubling as actors and musicians, have been among the most outstanding ensemble productions of recent years, and the Watermill's summer shows, with the audience promenading in the theatre's beautiful grounds, are magical.

Ford End Watermill : A short history and guide
The dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s followed later by improvements in farming methods, by changes in the eating habits of an increasing population and by the development of better transportation, all contributed to the establishment in the late 18th century of the independent miller who milled for a living.
There is a suggestion that the mill belonged to Neyrnut Manor in 1346, and the 'Victoria County History of Buckinghamshire' records that "the watermill in Ivinghoe was held in the 14th century by the Sigurnal and Alberd families".
In that year, the the mill is mentioned in the 'Posse Comitatus', a survey prepared by county as part of the precautionary preparations against the expected French invasion during the Napoleonic Wars.
