  Watership Down (1978)
Watership Down examines the lives of some rabbits who break off from their warren when one of them - an apparently psychic bunny named Fiver (voiced by Richard Briers) - foretells doom.
Watership Down appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.85:1 on this single-sided, single-layered DVD; the image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.
Still, that was fine for a movie from this era, and I thought the surrounds contributed a good sense of atmosphere.

Watership Down remains one of the most disturbing elements of my childhood and was possibly the catalyst for my love of horror and violence.
Watership Down is rated PG, much in the way that Jaws and Poltergeist are rated PG debatably.
There was a newer adaptation produced in 1999 which tones down the violence and maturethemes, but at the same time, robs the film of its heart and depth.

All told, the movie is an excellent and unsoftened take on the novel, though I regret the pacing that sometimes makes it feel like a TV movie; there are a few too many fades to fl where it seems a commercial should go.
Watership Down has gotten a somewhat tarnished "too intense for younger children" rep, and it does have its moments of abrupt, unforgiving violence when some of the characters meet the Black Rabbit of Inlé a lot sooner than they ever wanted to.
Watership Down can be viewed at an interpretive distance -- ah, it's a fable about society and the folly of systems built on force and hatred.

John Hurt: Watership Down - Movie
Rarely do movies do complete justice to the books on which they are based, but usually one can appreciate the movie for what it did with the material and the difficult job of compression and abridgement that must take place.
In this case, however, the movie is a poor representation of the book, lifting only major plot points and leaving behind the rich allegory and societal issues that are the heart of the story.
For instance, in the movie, the viewer is often unaware of the rabbits motives.

Watership Down is a long book so unfortunately the film had to leave out some of the characters (including some good ones) and incidents, and the end was rather rushed.
I was surprised at the contrast between the movie, book and show as well, but I doubt the show ever would have been aired if they kept it true to the book.

It's clear from the beginning that Watership Down is a tale about the dance with death — both avoiding and accepting it — as the film opens with an imaginatively rendered depiction of rabbitdom's blood-stained creation myth, the story of their ancestor, El-ahrairah.
Watership Down lies somewhere between Animal Farm, The Seven Samurai, and the works of Sam Peckinpah in its mature themes and depiction of violence.

Although Mike's second ever film project (excluding the Wombles movie) - in 1979 - involved him writing three songs -(and NOT the symphonic score he so much wanted to write) - the one song which remained in the movie at the final edit was "Bright Eyes".
More than twenty years later, when Rosen and others were putting together the TV series of Watership Down they hired Mike to score it - and the recently released Polydor album is testimonial to the score Batt would have delivered for the movie.
David Tomlinson tries hard to lift the movie into Disney/family teritory but misconcieved story and unimaginative direction of musical segments -(which were poor copies of Batt's own brilliant Womble pop group pastiches -on which they were based) did nothing to help.

Unique in the annals of animated films, Watership Down is a serious, even grim tale that many will find relentless and depressing and others will find poetic and moving.
However, these flaws are redeemed by some unforgettable sequences, including a chilling segment detailing the destruction of the rabbits' warren and a devastatingly sad end sequence in which the Black Rabbit of Death gently takes one of the heroes away with it.
Voiced by a fine cast, with stellar work from John Hurt and Richard Briers, Watership Down is an imperfect film with some of the most powerful moments ever created for the genre.
