Waterworld is a 1995 film that was co-produced by Kevin Costner and directed by Kevin Reynolds.
The ABC network held a special two-night event of Waterworld, which included an extended version of the film--Universal and Kevin Costner took the film from director Kevin Reynolds' hands during post-production and edited it down to the theatrical length of 133 minutes.

 Hollywood Gothique: Waterworld (1995) Review
The result was mostly panned when it was finally released, and yet it went on to do well enough at the box office to show that, if the budget had not gotten completely out of control, the film could have been a substantial profit-maker.
WATERWORLD contains some of the most astounding action scenes ever committed to celluloid; the sheer scale of spectacle is truly amazing, and it’s doubtful that viewers—except the most grumpy spoil-sports—would walk away bored.
The difference with WATERWORLD is that, apparently, the magnitude of the production convinced the filmmakers that seriousness was the order of the day, so they created a film that takes more time than necessary to get where it’s going, as if there really is something profound to be contemplated among the explosions.

According to Léger and his colleagues, these waterworlds would contain about six times the mass of Earth, in a sphere twice as wide as our planet.
While waterworlds seem to have everything to sustain life, there is a big question mark over whether they could actually allow it to start in the first place.
One of the leading theories for life's origin in deep oceans is that it requires hot springs on the ocean floor, heated by volcanic activity like the 'fl smokers' found here on Earth.

Nowhere near the Hollywood disaster that was foretold, Waterworld is a near-model summer fantasy: two hours and 21 minutes of loud, expansive fun.
Waterworld isn't "Fishtar," but Kevin Costner's pricey, post-apocalyptic sloshbuckler isn't a seafaring classic either.
Though Waterworld has some haunting underwater visual moments, the film's impact is weakened by flat dialogue, an overemphasis on jokeyness and a plot that, despite all those screenwriters, does not satisfactorily hold together at any number of points.

Movie Review | Waterworld (1995) Kevin Costner, Jeanne Tripplehorn
Waterworld is a post-apocalyptic film (from now on referred to as PAP for laziness's sake), a genre that was popular and commercially successful during the '80s, at a time when everyone was positing nuclear war between the U.S. and the Russians.
As far as I can recall, Waterworld was the first big budget PAP in a long, long time, and its concept (a world submerged in water) is a doozy.
In the case of Waterworld, much of the film (perhaps 90% of its running length) is shot on a moving ocean using real-sized models and sets with very little blue screen or cgi.

The score actually gets off to a rather slow start, beginning with a synthesised drumbeat and various Horner-style ethnic flutes wailing in the background of the 'Main Title', but as soon as the action begins in 'Escaping the Smokers', it hardly ever stops.
Although Newton Howard's cues are intelligently written and portray the film's action very well, there always seems to be this gnawing feeling that they could have been written for any action film ever made, and hence the score suffers from a lack of an individual identity.
