As part of this development, the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria and the Wattle League were influential in the planting of 12,000 wattles, natives and ornamental trees between 1926 and 1928 to improve the relatively degraded landscape.
Ownership of Wattle Park was transferred from the PTC to the Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works in 1991 [8], which undertook an extensive program of rehabilitation and replanting which continues to this day.

In 1983, the next series of trams for Melbourne, the A1 class, were put into service.
On conversion of Route 78 to pantograph operation in 1995, 231 - 240 were fitted with pantographs and transferred to Camberwell Depot for use on Route 70 to Wattle Park.
The A2 class introduced the pantograph to Melbourne's tramways and were initially used on the St. Kilda (Route 96) and the Port Melbourne (Route 111) light rail lines until sufficient B2 class trams were delivered.
