In 1967, Snow won first prize at the prestigious experimental film festival at Knokke-le-Zoute for "Wavelength." Despite its apparent simplicity, "Wavelength" had a tremendous impact on the evolution of film as a medium, and became an instantaneous avant-garde classic, setting a new standard for originality and rigor.
In ON SNOW'S WAVELENGTH - ZOOM OUT, filmmaker Teri Wehn-Damisch takes us into Snow's world by reversing the slow zoom-in of "Wavelength," the artist's influential experimental film.
ZOOM OUT borrows the concept of "Wavelength," but inverts the process by starting with a narrow field - the photograph of the wave fills the first frame - and ending it its widest field, unveiling a miniature set with seven screens and a grand piano.

Strangely enough, Wavelength’s portentous movement into the photo of the wave has influenced, consciously or not, several narrative films (in addition to The Passenger, Barton Fink 1991, Things Never Said in Playa Perdida 2001, The Shining 1980 (in their endings) and The Decline of the American Empire 1986 (in the beginning).
But Wavelength has also been a challenge for the seemingly more informed, film critics and theorists who have all too often incorrectly described the film as a “continuous” zoom taken from a single fixed camera position.

You can use a deep red filter with it and get dramatic infrared-like effects, BUT you can still handle it like an ordinary film -- it does not require loading in total darkness, and it is generally not sensitive to the infrared-only light leaks that plague users of other infrared films.
