wavenumber   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Wavenumber in most physical sciences is a wave property inversely related to wavelength, having units of inverse length.
The wavenumber is closely related to the concept of the wave vector.
Wavenumber in atmospheric science is defined as wavelength divided by the length of the spatial domain, or equivalently the number of times a wave has the same phase over the spatial domain.

 Superposition Principle
Thus, while the wavenumber of the resultant wave seems to be related to something like the average of the wavenumbers of the component waves, the spacing between regions of maximum wave amplitude appears to go inversely with the difference of the wavenumbers of the component waves.
is called the wavenumber spread of the wave packet, and it evidently plays a role similar to the difference in wavenumbers in the superposition of two sine waves -- the larger the wavenumber spread, the smaller the physical size of the wave packet.
Furthermore, the wavenumber of the oscillations within the wave packet is given approximately by the central wavenumber.

 TIME-FREQUENCY ANALYSIS RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
This choice indeed allows us to work at a high wavenumber resolution, with an uncertainty of ±0.008 cycles/m, which means a mean error of ~10%, as well as to distinguish the main limits in depth due to the attenuation of the wavenumber modulus amplitude.
The occurrence of the fundamental Milankovitch periods is greatly dependent on the sedimentation rate, as illustrated in Figure F10A; the wavenumbers corresponding to the 20-k.y.
As mentioned in the previous section, the wavenumbers appear to be smeared because of the high wavenumber resolution.

Any vector which is filtered must first remove the wavenumber which is due to the changing direction of a latitude circle.

Experimental Investigation of Acceleration and Velocity Fields in Turbulent Channel Flow   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
At low wavenumbers (large spatial scales), the bulk convective-derivative and velocity time-derivative spectra coincide with one another, implying that the velocity time derivative of the larger scales is dominated by evolution rather than convection.
Further, this wavenumber is coincident with the streamwise spacing of the spanwise vortices that are the building blocks of the outer-layer vortex organization noted earlier.
Therefore, the energy peak in the velocity time-derivative spectra at moderate wavenumbers can also be considered a statistical imprint of the true structure of the flow in the same spirit as the imprints left within the velocity statistics.

 Wavenumber Calibration QA Standard
The material of the standard is a wavenumber calibration device that has been improved in several respects over those available in the UK prior to 1992.
The NPL wavenumber calibration transfer standard has been introduced to allow routine checking of the wavenumber scales of mid-infrared spectrophotometers for Quality Assurance purposes.
Prior to July 1992 NPL was unwilling to calibrate the polystyrene films that were procurable, which were conventional films with glossy surfaces and were 50 µm or more in thickness: the IUPAC reference data refer to a film of 70 µm for most of the absorption peaks cited.

 Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle
This is because a small wave packet, which corresponds to accurate knowledge of the corresponding particle's position, implies the superposition of plane waves corresponding to a broad distribution of wavenumbers.
This translates into a large uncertainty in the wavenumber, and hence the momentum of the particle.
In contrast, a broad wave packet corresponds to a narrower distribution of wavenumbers, and correspondingly less uncertainty in the momentum.

Analysis of hurricane inner core data
Since the velocity and not the vorticity was sampled, in the case of the idealized profiles, we should not expect the vorticity profile to reproduce exactly that given by the corresponding equations.
The exception to this is the modified Rankine profile which often produces high wavenumber results, this is probably due to the discontinuity of basic state vorticity at the radius of maximum winds in this profile.
The largest number of cases in the raw data occurred in wavenumbers two and three, while the mean most unstable mode was in wavenumber five.

 Re: TKE SPECTRUM & DISSIPATION
The primary requirement in a DNS is to resolve the viscous dissipation at the small scale (high wavenumbers).
Also the numerical (artificial) dissipation should be minimal (i.e., small compared to the viscous dissipation at all wavenumbers) and all dissipation should be due to the viscous term only.
If the energy does not accumulate at high wavenumbers even after the viscosity is reduced a lot, you code is too dissipative for DNS or LES.

The formats used in several atlases are linear %T vs linear wavenumber, usually from 4000 to 400 wavenumber, with a 2x scale expansion of the fingerprint region below 2000 wavenumbers, with grids having grid pitches of about 100 wavenumbers per 6 to 8 mm below 2000 wavenumber (compared to yours of 100 wavenumbers per 10mm).
For close-ups of small wavenumber ranges (usually of a particular band or cluster of bands), no changes in scale expansion should be used, or are needed.
I think the spectra in the paper, Non-destructive identification of minerals by Raman microscopy by Ray Frost, Theo Kloprogge, and Jolene Schmidt, which preceded yours in the same IJVS demonstrates perfectly the point that a grid is essential.

Data from very high horizontal resolution simulations with the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory SKYHI general circulation model are used to calculate the kinetic energy spectrum as a function of horizontal wavenumber, k, in the upper troposphere.
Partitioning of the flow between rotational and divergent components shows that the rotational part dominates at large scales and that there is approximate equipartition between rotational and divergent parts at mesoscales.
Analysis of the parameterized kinetic energy dissipation shows that vertical diffusion dominates horizontal diffusion for a wide range of wavenumbers extending well into the -5/3 regime.

e-Prints Soton - Internal gravity wave frequencies and wavenumbers from single point measurements over a slope
The analysis assumes that, over the periods of time in which estimates are made, the local mean buoyancy frequency, N, and temperature gradient are uniform, and the bottom slope, α, is constant over the scale of the observed waves and is known.
It is further assumed that, during short periods of analysis, the internal wave field is dominated by waves having a single wavenumber vector at each frequency.
The estimated values may be used to test assumptions of small wave steepness and the uniformity of buoyancy frequency over the vertical scale of the waves. Problems of application are revealed by using the analysis on data collected from a mooring located within the hyperlimnion on the sloping side of Lake Geneva.

 Three region model
The transition from one wavenumber to the next occurs at the ``V'' in the contour.
Keeping in mind that these results are for the three region model only, we can observe from this figure that the upper bound described by the semicircle theorem becomes a better approximation as the wavenumber of the instability increases.
We should also note that, strictly speaking, the semicircle theorem as presented in section 2.1.2 is not valid for this problem since in 2.1.2 we implicitly assumed that the vorticity profile was smooth while here we allow discontinuities in that profile.

Devices and analytical techniques are disclosed for measuring spatial profiles of complex premeability and conductivity of a material by multiple wavenumber interrogations.
Coil array structures are disclosed which define a number of different fundamental wavelengths (or wavenumbers).
Spatially periodic interrogation signals (of temporal frequency "w") from the coil array structures are attenuated by varying degrees in the material undergoing analysis, depending on the wavenumber ("k"), therby permitting the derivation of composite complex permeability/conductivity profile.

The Rydberg-Ritz combination principle (Rydberg 1890, Ritz 1908) states that it is possible to find pairs of spectral lines, which have the property that the sum of their wavenumbers is also an observed spectral line.

Energy is conserved, E=hf, so the two frequencies (wavenumbers) of the latter route add to the frequency of the first route.
