The Waverley Line was extended to Bondi Junction in 1884 and to Bondi Aquarium in 1887.
The line was important in connecting the township with the main ferry wharf for the North Shore, the land in between being a steep rise from the waterfront to the ridge.
The Maryville Line was extended to Port Waratah to service the BHP Steelworks in 1916 being the last major construction for the Newcastle system with the exception of a line to Port Waratah Wharf in 1920 which did not operate beyond a number of trial runs before being abandoned and removed.

This is where the lines east from Waverley escape the city centre on a falling 1 in 78 gradient - the steepest of all the sections on the East Coast Main Line from Kings Cross.
This was the northern junction for the loop line to Peebles and the Penicuik line which came off the loop at Hawthornden Junction.
A further reminder of the dip in the line that was St. Boswells is to be had slightly south of the station in the form of the old concrete and wood gradient sign.

Although the line initially closed with the Outer Circle Railway in the 1890s, the section between Burnley and Darling was soon reopened and later extended to Glen Waverley.
Although there have been plans in the past past that the line may be extended to Knox or to Rowville, the line currently terminates well short of the suburban limits and any extension of the line would be costly due to the extent of tunnelling which would be involved.

I never travelled on the Waverley line, but I suspect that the same was true there - Borderers travelling to Edinburgh or Carlisle preferred the convenience of cars and, by 1969, there was no case for keeping the line open.
