Palatable Prevention: Edible Vaccines Pass First Test in Humans, Dateline: NIAID, September 1998
Community-wide treatment of curable sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) reduced STD rates and improved pregnancy outcomes but did not reduce the number of new HIV infections, according to a Ugandan study supported by NIAID.
Maria Wawer, M.D., a lead investigator from the Columbia University School of Public Health in New York City, presented the study results at the 12th World AIDS Conference in Geneva.
Wawer and her colleagues from Uganda and the United States conducted the study in 56 villages in Uganda's Rakai district, where approximately 16 percent of the population is infected with HIV.
