Topic: Wax moths

  Biology - Bee Behavior
Larvae of the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella, cause considerable damage to combs left unattended by bees.
Adult female moths fly at night and deposit masses of eggs on unprotected honeycombs and in the cracks between hive bodies.
CAUTION: Moth balls and crystals (naphthalene) should not be used to control wax moth.

Wax moths are also called wax worms, web worms, and bee moths by people in different parts of North America.
Lesser wax moth larvae are usually described as being pinkish in colour, and greater wax moth larvae as white.
Should a wax moth dare to enter their colony, the bees will soon drive her out of the hive again before she has had the chance to lay eggs inside it.

The Greater Wax moth (Galleria mellonia L.) are 1/2 to 3/4 inches long and grayish in color.
The female wax moth deposits her eggs in the cracks and other places inside the hive.
All states of the greater wax moth are killed at a temperature of 115°F (46°C) for 80 minutes or a temperature of 120°F (49°C) for 40 minutes.

Wax can be separated in solar wax melters, by boiling in water then filtering, or by using steam or boiling water and special presses.
Wax cleaned in a solar wax extractor can sometimes be less aromatic and will be much whiter, almost the pale white color of paraffin wax.
Wax will slowly crystallize over time and as a consequence become harder, but this process is reversible without any damage, just as with crystallized honey.

Wax melts at 150 F, but burns easily, so it should be melted in a stock pot or similar that is in a larger pot of water.
By sealing the box edges with paper tape (if needed), then coating with wax, the contents are protected from infestation via infiltration from other contaminated cereals or grains, and the contents are protected from moisture while freezing, while the freezing itself kills any larvae present.
Coating boxes with wax and freezing is a bit of a boring job, but as many of the items we are now stockpiling are for long term storage and use under conditions when those products might not be commercially available, it is worth the effort.

Adult wax moths may deposit their eggs whenever pollen is exposed while in the pollen trap on the hive, and during processing and packaging.

Clothes moths in general are dark-loving insects and, although males and spent females sometimes come to light, they are more likely to scuttle for cover than to fly into the open when disturbed.
Caterpillars of pyralid moths are generally whitish or pale-yellowish in colour with few distinguishing features, but often they can be recognise by their vigorous wriggling when disturbed.
Other pyralid moth pests include the Wax Moth (Galleria mellonella) which is a pest in honey bee hives, where the larvae feed on the wax of the combs, covering them with silken tunnels.

It is important to remember that large wax moth populations in bee colonies are generally the result of a bee colony being weakened in population for some other reason (starvation, pesticide poisoning, failing queen) which allows the moths to get established.
Although generally present in weakened bee colonies, wax moths are not the direct cause of a colony's demise.
Some of the worst cases of wax moth damage occur in stacks of supers.

The most effective method for preventing wax moth damage in hives occupied by bees is to maintain strong colonies.
Stored equipment can be protected against wax moths by fumigating it with paradichlorobenzene crystals or by stacking honey supers in a criss-cross fashion in open sheds.
