	Waxhaws - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The Waxhaws are in the Piedmont region of North and South Carolina, southwest of the little known (and little) Uwharrie Mountains, and southeast of Charlotte.
		This was the Waxhaw Massacre, in which a force of about 350 Virginian Continentals under Col. Buford tried to surrender to the British Col. Banastre Tarleton and a force of 700 dragoons.
		The Waxhaw region is largely rural with a number of small towns, the remnants of a textile industry, and a fair number of new industries.

		About 9 miles east of Lancaster on SC Highway 522, a quarter of a mile south of Highway 9, there is a two-acre plot of land with two historical markers, a stone wall, and two mass graves.
		A major result of Buford's Massacre was to stimulate a vast amount of hatred toward the British in the Scotch-Irish communities of Lancaster, Chester, and York.
		Because the writing on the 1860 could not be read and the stone was badly chipped by souvenir hunters, in 1955 the Lancaster County Historical Commission and the Daughters of the American Revolution, Waxhaws Chapter, erected a second monument repeating the wording of the first.

		By a forced march of one hundred and five miles in fifty-five hours, he overtook Buford, on the Waxhaw (May 29th, 1780), and almost surrounded him before the republican leader was aware of his approach.
		Cornwallis eulogized this savage act of Tarleton; Stedman, one of Cornwallis's officers, and a historian of the war, wrote: "On the occasion, the virtue of humanity was totally forgot." Tarleton received the special favor of Lord George Germain, for the cold-blooded massacre; and "Tarleton's quarter," became the synonym for cruelty.
		Among the witnesses of that massacre was Andrew Jackson, then a lad thirteen years of age.

		Abraham Buford (July 21, 1747-June 30, 1833) was a Continental Army officer during the American Revolutionary War, most known as commanding officer during the "Waxhaw Massacre".
		Born in Culpeper County, Virginia, Buford quickly organized a company of minutemen upon the outbreak of war in 1775, eventually rising to the rank of Colonel by May 1778.
		However, British forces continued their attack against the routed American force as many soldiers were bayoneted to death as they attempted to surrender to British forces (resulting in the incident known as the "Waxhaw Massacre").
