In the 1930s, when tourism to Bali was just beginning, two western residents, painter Walter Spies and author Katharane Mershon felt that the “cak” chorus of the Sanghyang dances, taken out of its ritual context with an added storyline, would be a hit among their friends and other visitors.
Working with Limbak and his troupe in Bedulu village, they incorporated Baris movements into the role of the cak leader.
Such was the popularity of Manuk Rawa that other bird forms sprung up, notably Tari Kedis Perit (“sparrow dance”) by Ni Ketut Arini Alit, and Tari Belibis (a story of a mother swan and her young) and Tari Cendrawasih (“bird of paradise dance”) both by Ni Luh Suasthi Bandem, also a lecturer at STSI.

These days, modern hand-phone sms defines the main tool of communication on the island, and as Polenk puts it, "You can select who is invited and who isn't." The sound of the kulkul invites everyone, but sms ignores some 'dissidents'.
The kulkul reminds me of a story of Bali back in 1930s, as it was once told by the late maestro I Wayan Limbak.
Indeed, even without modern mechanics and electronic noise, the echoes of the kulkul during the days of young Limbak could be heard from afar.

I've done some reading and it turns out Spies helped Pak Limbak (mister Limbak) create the kecak from the Sang Hyang trance dance, which is still performed without tourists.
I'd really like to see the Sang Hyang, because the Hindu elements of the kecak really annoyed me. So, you are right: Spies helped develop the kecak, but the origins were native.
Oh, Limbak's first name is Wayan, which we soon found out is the name of every firstborn on Bali, regardless of gender.

The vibrant tones were bitter sweet and often I could actually pick out in the background the angklung or bamboo rattles which were shaken accompanying the orchestra, however with time angklung had disappeared and has only remained in name for the orchestra making it much rarer to hear in the recording.
There were a few photos including the famous composer I Wayan Lotring and a few other photos which make it more wonderful to see rare photos of musicians playing with their musical instruments.
I can recommend this cd to anyone who is interested regarding the first recordings of gamelan music development with the radical kebyar style in Bali which started a few years after the Dutch takeover of Bali as well as the gamelan pelegongan, gender wayang etc I give it the thumbs up.
