Wayfarers Chapel began as a dream in the mind of Elizabeth Schellenberg, a member of the Swedenborgian Church who lived on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the late 1920s.
Today, what you are looking at is not a glass church but a "tree chapel." Chapel architect Lloyd Wright, son of the renowned American architectural pioneer Frank Lloyd Wright, had been inspired by the cathedral-like majesty of the redwood trees in northern California.

All are held beneath the towering redwood beams of what is nicknamed the "glass chapel," one that has a view that extends to the Pacific waters and to Catalina Island.
The ceremonies are performed by chapel ministers ordained by the Swedenborgian Church but, with approval, a couple's minister, rabbi, or priest may also participate in the ceremony.

On February 24, 2004, the Planning Commission approved a revision to Conditional Use Permit No. 185 (Case No. ZON2003-00683), to allow The Wayfarers Chapel to install 13 ten-foot tall light standards in the median of the parking lot.
This minor modification allowed The Wayfarers Chapel to install 45" tall light bollards in lieu of the 10’ tall light standards.
Staff noted that the lights do not appear to illuminate the adjoining property and they are turned off when the chapel is closed.
