Wayne Grudem's Bible Doctrine Book Report
Wayne Grudem's "little" version of his larger systematic work, An introduction to Biblical Doctrine, offers a solid doctrinal study and teaching aid that is geared primarily for undergraduate studies and layman.
While I generally agree with Grudem's conclusions regarding 1 Corinthians 13 (excepting his description of tongues as a prayer language and not a genuine dialect), the continuation or cessation of the spiritual gifts are a peripheral doctrine and should be treated as such in such limited space.
Grudem tends to affirm this, but he skirts the issue that most Christians today are taught that only the original autographs are inspired (true) but that the words of these inspired texts were not providentially preserved through history.

Grudem spends much time discussing the Holy Spirit (though the chapters are scattered around the book and not in one section)and especially the church.
Whether one agrees with Grudem or not on this issue, he should be read, because he approaches the subject from a scholarly standpoint with supreme concern for the text of Scripture.
Grudem's theology is very consistent and Bible-based and I appreciate how his theology is consistently tied back to the inerrancy of The Word.

Amazon.com: The Gift of Prophecy in the New Testament and Today: Books: Wayne Grudem   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Wayne Grudem is a scholar, and his approach to the New Testament gift of prophecy is refreshing in that he appeals to the thinking Christian.
Grudem correlates the Old Testament prophet to the New Testament Apostle, while arguing that the New Testament gift of prophecy is not infallible, verbally inspired speech; it is simply God bringing a thought to the mind of a believer.
Whether Grudem's conclusions are correct in totality, in partiality (my view), or not at all, this is the type of work we need to read for intelligent study of these difficult and divisive issues.
