The city’s development was in the hands of a merchant elite, who built up English foreign trade as members of the Hansebund.
Paris became the capital of France in 508AD, under Clovis I. During the Carolingian rule, the city was repeatedly attacked by the Normans and was temporarily relegated to the status of a count’s seat.
The wall on the left bank of the Seine was rebuilt under Charles V to better protect the city from the English and, in 1370, he had another wall built on the right bank of the river.

We built this city . with quantum mechanics
According to Arida: "The city is both the people and the buildings they inhabit." He defines these two complementary dualities as urbs and civitas, or stone and emotion.
Rather, a city's architectural evolution must unfold in accordance with the pulse of the people, evolving in light of cultural changes, transformations in intellectual outlooks and shifts in emotion.
From cities of God, governed by religious fervor, to cities of man, where humanism reigned architectural design, Arida neatly explains the cultural trends that produced the cities of our past using quantum language, and applies this model to the present.

The first building stone used was taken from the promontory on which Quebec City is built, in the heart of the city.
But the operation of quarries in and near the city was not without problems, which included the risk of rockfalls.
Despite its proximity to the city, it was not used much before this time because it was hard and difficult to cut and because it had a tendency to break into thin layers at the surface.

Tens of thousands of Mormon immigrants funneled through Salt Lake City to outlying settlements, and, additionally, the city was the last major supply point for thousands of California-bound travelers.
As the headquarters of the LDS Church and later the territorial and state capital, Salt Lake City and its county have always been the center not only of Utah's population but also of its political and economic power.
Although cities and suburbs now cover much of the land, the county retains traces of its agricultural beginning as a producer of eggs, hogs, wheat, and garden vegetables.

I’m on my way to Broken City, a deliberately ramshackle bar on Eleventh Avenue where I’ve arranged to meet a handful of people from the Calgary Urban Initiative (CUI), an upstart group of young Calgarians concerned with the development of their city.
For too long, few Calgarians have cast a critical eye upon their built environment, choosing instead to accept its flimsy façade of urbanity as if it were the real thing.
Brent Toderian is an urban planner and manager of the Centre City Plan, a scheme that is crafting a new and comprehensive vision of centre-city Calgary.

OK, so "We Built" won the award for worst pop lyrics in a recent poll ("Marconi plays the mamba, listen to the radio..." Hmmmm, yesssss), but surely that's not the point.
Starship weren't trying to encapsulate anything profound in that song, merely the atmosphere of a west-coast city with a rock music radio station - and that they succeeded in doing splendidly, coupling a superb bassline with a pure power-pop chorus.
Two of the hits, "We Built This City" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" (from the film 'Mannequin') prove that this CD is worth every penny.
