He is the author of We Wish To Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families, an in-depth account of the Rwanda genocide.
It was the rhetoric of "Our beloved president was killed by them," when in fact everything indicates that they either killed him or certainly exploited his death within moments.
Certainly, the wish that it was only a cease-fire violation, rather than the wish to see clearly how starkly it was in fact the fulfillment of all the predictions of extermination.

"Hutus kill Tutsis, then Tutsis kill Hutus--if that's really all there is to it, then no wonder we can't be bothered with it," Philip Gourevitch writes, imagining the response of somebody in a country far from the ethnic strife and mass killings of Rwanda.
Philip Gourevitch writes in an unusual way, not like a standard war-correspondent; having spent almost an entire year in Rwanda (and doing research and interviews in the US), he not only relates to the african country and its people, but he is also able to convey their emotions to the reader.
and, moreover, it is his deep understanding, explanation and discussion of why this bloody episode of modern african history occurred that make 'we wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families: stories of rwanda' more than a great read but a must read.

But the RPF didn't reach Butare till early July, and roughly seventy-five percent of the Tutsis in Rwanda had been killed by early May. In this regard, at least, the genocide had been entirely successful: to those who were targeted, it was not death but life that seemed an accident of fate.
They may think that they didn't kill because they didn't take life with their own hands, but the people were looking to them for their orders.

But as the killing raged in Rwanda, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights was using the term "possible genocide" to describe events, apparently afraid that calling a spade a spade would require action under the Convention.
In the summer of 2004, various groups called for the Bush administration to label the killings as "genocide." Reminiscent of Rwanda, the administration first refused to use the word, even after the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution in July explicitly invoking the term "genocide" in describing the Sudan events.

Over the next 100 days, between 800,000 and 1 million Tutsis and Hutu oppositionists were killed, most by machete, while the international community stood idly by -- and, in some cases, acted in a manner that allowed the Hutu génocidaires to conduct their bloody work with even more ferocity and expediency.
The subsequent killing was horrific not just for its savagery but for the matter-of-fact manner in which it was carried out.
Not nearly enough is being done to solve the problems of the country, where politically motivated mass killings continue.

With 800,000 people killed in 100 days, Gourevitch found many numbed Rwandans who had lost whole families to the machete.
Gourevitch excoriates the French for supporting the Hutus for essentially racist reasons; the international relief agencies, which he characterizes as largely devoid of moral courage; and the surrounding countries that preyed on the millions of refugees?many fleeing the consequences of their part in the killings.

The West and the UN failed to act in 1994 when Hutus killed 800,000 of their Tutsi neighbors in 100 days, an efficiency that put Nazi Germany to shame.
Then when exiled Rwandans (both Tutsi and Hutu) mounted an invasion to stop the genocide, the West and the UN prolonged it by setting up mismanaged refugee camps which the Hutu forces used as bases from which to continue their attacks.

Gourevitch's book is a gut-wrenching account of the 1994 genocide on the part of the Hutu government to kill 800,000 Tutsi neighbors, not because of the graphic nature but because of the complacency and ignorance of the rest of the world while this was happening.
Heart-wrenching and somewhat overwhelming, it too me back to my travels to Africa and reinforced my beliefs that something must be done to prevent another Rwanda in places like Darfur that are well on their way.
