Weak atheism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Weak atheism contrasts with strong or explicit atheism, which asserts that our current knowledge is enough to show that God or gods necessarily cannot exist, and theism, which asserts that there is at least one god.
The weak atheist generally gives a broad definition of atheism as a lack or absence of evidence justifying a belief in God or gods, which defines atheism as a range of positions that entail non-belief, unjustified belief, doubt, or denial of theism.
Weak and strong agnostics often argue that their position is the default one: that every person is born without belief in any god or gods, and must be taught the concept before they can become theistic.

Atheism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some weak atheists are without any opinion regarding the existence of deities, either because of a lack of thought on the matter, a lack of interest in the matter (see apatheism), or a belief that the arguments and evidence provided by both theists and strong atheists are equally unpersuasive.
Some weak atheists feel that theism and strong atheism are equally untenable, on the grounds that faith is required both to assert and to deny the existence of deities, and as such both theism and strong atheism have the burden of proof placed on them to prove that a god does or doesn't exist.
Atheists reject this view and assert that they are as motivated towards moral behavior as anyone, citing possible non-theistic sources of moral behavior such as: their upbringing; natural empathy, compassion and a human concern for others; respect for order, society, and law; and a desire for a good reputation and self-esteem.

Weak atheism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Weak atheism or negative atheism is the lack of belief in any gods without the conviction that no gods exist.
Weak atheism is in contrast to strong atheism, in which the atheist makes the positive assertion that there are no gods, and theism, in which the theist asserts that there is at least one god of some kind.
The difference between "strong" and "weak" atheism might be summed up as follows: strong atheism is the "belief" that there are no gods, while weak atheism is the "lack" of belief in god(s).

'Weak' And 'Strong' As Philosophical Terms James Spairana (Reply) (3-01)
The "strong" atheist has examined at least one god claim and has concluded that the god idea is nonsensical, the god idea is impossible, or the god claims are delusions or outright lies.
The "weak" atheist may or may not take it that far, and may or may not have even heard a god claim, but lacks a belief in gods nonetheless.
So, an infant is a "weak" atheist, in that it does not have a god belief, but is not a strong atheist.

If you were to tell an atheist of this kind that God exists, they might say, "You are wrong." These are typically known as "strong atheists" (which does not imply that they are mentally or physically stronger than other kinds of atheists; the word "strong" simply implies a more active form of belief).
If you were to tell an atheist of this kind that God exists, they might say, "You're free to believe that, but I see no reason to." These are known as "weak atheists," since it is a more passive mode of belief.
Weak atheists lack a belief in gods the same way they lack a belief in invisible pink unicorns -- it's not that they specifically avoid believing in traditional religious deities, it's that they simply lack a belief in anything supernatural.

Weak atheism is defined as the absence of belief in God.
In practice, however, weak atheism and strong atheism are taken to be mutually exclusive; one cannot be both a weak atheist and a strong atheist.
A weak atheist is therefore someone who both lacks belief that God does exist and lacks belief that God does not exist.
