The New and Improved Wealtheow:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Even though Wealtheow’s kingdom has been plagued by Grendel for twelve years, there is no sense in the poem that she is a broken-hearted victim.
Wealtheow’s gracious side, which is demonstrated in the poem, is shown in much the same way in the novel.
Her basic kindness is demonstrated when Hrothgar and Wealtheow visit the dying Shaper (the poet), and she “puts her fingertips gently on the old man’s forehead” (143).

 SparkNotes: Grendel: Chapter 7
Though Wealtheow is awe-inspiring in her beauty and comforting in her kindness, Grendel sees her less as an individual woman and more as representative of the state of all women—as he makes clear when he compares Wealtheow to his own wretched mother and finds little essential difference.
Wealtheow is never shown with female companions, which underlines her function in this patriarchal society: she exists to articulate relationships between men.
Wealtheow is even named in honor of her duty to the men of her world: she is a “servant of common good.” Grendel finds this idealized image of women just as seductive as the Danes do, but he breaks that illusion when he storms the hall and exposes Wealtheow’s sex organs.

 Grendel Summary by John Gardner
In verse and play-like scenes, the story is told of how Hrothgar's brother Halga was killed, and his son, fourteen year old Hrothulf, came to live with Hrothgar.
Wealtheow watches Hrothulf sleep, amazed at how sad such a young man is. She murmurs that he will grow sadder still: his young cousins, who he loves now, will one day take the throne, and rule over him.
He looks at Wealtheow, knowing that she is too young and beautiful for him, knowing that she knows all his fears and worries, which makes them worse.

 SparkNotes: Grendel: Chapter 8
Though Hrothulf has nicer things to say about the kind and loving Wealtheow, simple love is not enough for him to justify the divide between the rich and the poor.
Wealtheow knows that Hrothulf, though he shows kindness to her sons now, will come to resent them when they ascend to Hrothgar’s throne.
Hrothgar sees Wealtheow as the worst trap of all: the youth she has wasted on an elderly husband reminds him of all the pain and potentially meaningless suffering they have endured together.

When Queen Wealtheow, King Hrothgar's wife, hears of this, she says to him, "The word is that you want to adopt this warrior as a son.
Wealtheow is most likely worried about Beowulf just simply conquering their people for Geatland, the people not liking his foreign methods, she obviously does not want to take kingship rights from her beloved relatives whom she considers worthy of the role, and does not want to see friction occur between Beowulf and their kin.
Wealtheow knows that allowing a foreigner to take over the throne of Denmark will cause the welfare of the Danes to suffer.

But he also saw in Wealtheow something as touching as one of the Shaper's songs: she was innocent, beautiful and pure.

Beowulf is the queen of the Danes, Hrothgar’s wife, Wealtheow.
She is the most notable and well-known female character in the story and from the time she first enters Heorot her graciousness and servitude is revealed.
The only other character besides Wealtheow that is explicitly looked favorably upon in the poem is Hygd, wife of Hygelac king of the Geats.

This story of kin-killing of the past is repeated in the present time through Hrothgar’s wife, Wealtheow, “her kindred’s peace-pledge” between her people and the Danes (line 1783).
Although this marriage actually is the only one in the work successful in providing peace (at least temporarily), Wealtheow nonetheless expresses concern for her sons, primarily from nephew Hrothulf, whom she reminds of his obligations to her sons (lines 1042-1044).
She fears for their safety and positions, rightfully so it will turn out, and so asks Beowulf for a pledge to aid them, as he will now be famed for his strength and valor.

The Shaper brought the Old Testament to the village, but Wealtheow brings the New Testament ideals with her — sacrifice - “she’d lain aside her happiness for [the people of her land]” (104).
But I think that what stopped Grendel from killing her was not her beauty, but Grendel’s inability to bear a compromise between Wealtheow’s pure beauty and her undeniable physicality which to him ruins that ideal beauty.
Gardner shows Unferth with his dark and light side, Wealtheow with her dark and light side, Grendel with his dark and light side, Hrothgar too.

Wealtheow on the other hand felt that the kingdom should be preserved for her sons.
He contemplated killing her because he wanted to get rid of these feelings, instead he decided to focus on the undesirable side Wealhtheow, "her unqueenly shrieks" and "the ugliness between her legs(the bright tears of blood)." A cup of an intoxicating drink is passed, the intoxicating nature of which is important to the symbolism of the rite as it is the result of transformation of the natural ingredients to a drink that is clearly outside of ordinary reality.
In the sumbel in Beowulf, Wealtheow's careful passing of the cup and speech parallels that of the norns, who pour the holy liquid over the roots of the tree to nourish them and keep it growing.
The words that are spoken in sumble are important, and must be considered carefully as they become a part of orlog, blending into the past as well as setting the course for the future.

This could be a compassionate side of Grendel sowing itself because Grendel has feelings for Wealtheow so it would not allow him to kill her.

Grendel (John Gardner) - book review
Writing from Grendel's perspective, Gardner makes him into an everyman, facing the existential terror of human existence but at the same time observing humanity from the outside.
While trying to work out who he is and what he should do, Grendel eavesdrops on Hrothgar's hall, is fascinated by Wealtheow and the Shaper, Hrothgar's harper, humiliates Unferth, confronts a nihilist dragon, and confuses priests, before meeting his end at the hands of a stranger from over the sea.
Grendel mixes fantasy, lyrical description, dialogue, and poetry with philosophical rumination on topics from personal morality to the nature of the state and the power of art, weaving them into a complex multi-layered text.
