Technological escalation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Is the purpose of technology an indicator of advancement or the cause of advancement?
It was perhaps apparent that due to superior firepower and the ability to support larger numbers of people due to intensive agriculture which in turn relied on technological support (such as the iron plough and horse or ox yoke), the colonists were triumphing over people in many ways morally, socially and spiritually superior.
By this point, the competing polities were only concerned with their own survival and conquering all the others — the notion of coexistence was subordinated in most, but especially in Germany, Russia and the United States, to the idea of technological escalation to the point of triumph of one master race or economic system.

Tailored weapon effects for discriminant employment were developed for the "Safeguard" ABM program and battlefield weapons, and the most controversial of the inventions was the "neutron bomb" which could kill enemy forces by enhanced radiation with little collateral damage to structures and the environment.
Nuclear weapons create a strategic environment in which deterrence is at least theoretically feasible in terms of being economically bearable and of preventing the use of all-out war to settle a conflict.
The new technology is expected to produce operational weapons with characteristics far beyond anything presently in the inventory, to do so making use of previously-undiscovered principles, and to accomplish this unfeasible feat cheaply and within four or five years.

The Truth Seeker - Israel and US Develop Infrared Beam Weapon
This display of Soviet weapon technology was meant to impress upon the U.S. Air Force “how a stealth bomber could be turned into dust in the same way,” the physicist said.
Although such technology is not widely discussed in the West, the Soviet infrared beam weapon is nothing new and was used during a Soviet dispute with China in 1968 to destroy “a wall” at the Ussuri River, which separates Manchuria from Russia’s Far East, according to the physicist.
If the WTC had been struck by a similar weapon, than it is very likely, according to the East German physicist that one of the transmitters would have been placed in a high building nearby and the second one on a ship or across the East River.

Long before the advent of alchemists, weapon technicians practiced ‘scientific methods.’  They used inductive and deductive reasoning, trial and error, repetition and confirmation of results, the extraction, refinement and admixture of standard elements into consistent compounds, and other clever lab tricks.
Weapon technicians produce the most sophisticated, durable and expensive contraptions: hunters’ and warriors’ state-of-the-artifacts.

Projectile weapons are generally outdated in the 24th century, but the TR-116 (DS9: "Field of Fire"), designed for environments in which phasers are useless and probably with the Borg in mind too, is a formidable weapon.
According to Seven of Nine, the technology is akin to Borg transwarp (TNG: "Descent").
On the other hand, it is disturbing that such an extremely dangerous technology is commonplace in starships, considering that life in the 24th century is nearly free of risks.

Traction catapults were the next step in medieval catapult technology, using the same basic design as torsion catapults while replacing the source of the catapult's power.
Where torsion catapults relied on twisted rope springs (torsion springs) for power, traction catapults used human power to launch rocks and other projectiles great distances.
Although they were sometimes called pull-throwers or witches' hair, these catapults were most often referred to as traction catapults.
