Disarming Saddam, one word at a time. By Christopher Hitchens
The main weapon in the first instance was the helicopter-gunship, and the chief one in the second instance was high explosive.
Mass destruction of humans and resources was the outcome in each case, but this tells us little about the weaponry (while telling us a good deal about the regime).

Many WMD agents cause indirect or delayed health impacts, not the least of which is the psychological impact of a person not knowing whether he or she has been exposed or infected.
Because significant WMD risks are not immediately apparent (without lab testing, for example), it will be difficult for field offices to know when or where they can deploy their teams.

The Error of American Policy in Relation to Iraq
The further irony of the situation, is the claim that Iraq has "weapons of mass distruction." Iraq "may" have weapons of mass distruction, whereas North Korea has annouced repeatedly that they have many weapons of mass distruction stocked, which the United States chooses to ignore.
Further more, the weapons that Iraq may have are not weapons it designed and created by their own means- they were obtained from the United States previously to enable Iraq to defend itself against the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979 after the Shah of Iran was overthrown.
There is no realistic cause, the claims of Iraqi weapons of mass distruction cannot be supported and the cost to the United Nations and the Iraqi people are too high.

And for the first time the U.S. mass media is beginning to ask pointed questions about President Bush's rationale for launching a preemptive war, creating a new opportunity for peace forces.
The absence of proof that Iraq was in recent possession of WMD — a fact exposed many months before the war by the international antiwar and left movements, and a topic of considerable speculation in a number of foreign newspapers — has finally penetrated the consciousness of sectors of the U.S. corporate mass media.
Another reason the White House "settled" on WMD as the required pretext was that its previous demand for regime-change (i.e., arrogating to itself the right to violently topple governments that cultivated Bush's displeasure) was rejected by virtually all other countries.
