Topic: Weary Blues

In the News (Wed 3 Dec 08)

  On "The Weary Blues"
In "The Weary Blues" Hughes dealt with the blues singer and his song in relation to the speaker of the poem.
It combines traditional blues stanzas that emphasize the roots of African-American experience, touches of vaudeville blues as the roots were being "refined," pride in African-American creativity and forms of expression, and a sense of the weariness that ties together generations of African-Americans.
What the blues articulates is the simultaneous presence of the "tragic and comic aspects of the human conditions." Thus, the blues in the poem is not the conventional "either/or" condition configured within the Cartesian construct.

Students consider the poetic devices and recurring themes in blues lyrics and the significance of the poetry of the blues as part of the African American oral tradition.
Specifically, blues songs are part of the African American oral tradition, a tradition rooted in slavery in which the stories, emotions, and history of the African American people were passed down through storytelling and songs.
As a class, listen to two blues songs that clearly represent the storytelling legacy of the blues: "John Henry" and "Stack O' Lee." As the students listen, ask them to note what story the song is attempting to commemorate.

 Langston Hughes
It’s that “droning drowsy syncopated” blues played by the “Negro” “by the pale dull pallor of one bulb light” that is described in his poem.
The singer continues in a typical I, IV, V chord blues pattern, “I got the Weary Blues And I can’t be satisfied.
Got the Weary Blues And can’t be satisfied--- I ain’t happy no mo’ And I wish that I had died.” Ah yes, the droning, drowsy, swaying and moaning continues.

And maybe the Weary Boys, like much of their audience, are just country boys at heart, and that self-effacing sense of humor is just masking some genuine sensitivity.
The energy that courses through the album and the Weary Boys' live performance comes from the genuine rush of playing their music as true to the spirit of the originals as possible, which is no small feat when you're trying to learn from and keep up with albums by lightning-fast pickers like the Stanley Brothers.
Indeed, the best way to experience the Weary Boys is to see them live, lined-up in a row onstage with their bushy beards, fl hats and sharply pressed, vintage western wear, looking for all the world like Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm and the rest of The Band, circa 1969.

It often (but not necessarily) follows a form, in which a statement is made in the first line, a variation is given in the second line, and an ironic alternative is declared in the third line.
African-American writer Ralph Ellison said that although the blues are often about struggle and depression, they are also full of determination to overcome difficulty "through sheer toughness of spirit." This resilience in the face of hardship is one of the hallmarks of the blues poem.
The title poem of Hughes’ first book, The Weary Blues, is also an excellent example of a blues poem.

Explain that many blues songs are written in a "12-bar" pattern, referring to the number of bars or measures typically used to convey a theme (see PBS: The Blues Web site for a good explanation).
In 12-bar blues, the lyrics usually follow an AAB pattern: the first two lines of a stanza are similar (if not the same), and are each termed "A" while the third line, "B", responds to or resolves the idea presented in the first two lines.
Mention that "St. Louis Blues" was first published in 1914 by W.C. Handy, who is often referred to as the father of the blues; "Hard Time Killing Floor" was written in the 1930s; and "Alabama Blues" was written in 1966.

Hughes begins "The Weary Blues" with a narrator speaking in a voice that does not seem particularly fl, but if it is a white voice, it is a notable sympathetic one.
Furthermore, there seems to be little emotional connection or relationship with the man singing the Weary Blues, rather the narrator is studying the man with an intense interest that implies that all of the observations of "Sweet Blues!/ Coming from a fl man's soul" (14, 15) are new.
In the ending of "The Weary Blues" Hughes reveals to the reader that the white observer and the fl blues player may seem separate but actually share a deep bond.

Spirituals are represented with the mournful "Angel of Death," and the Matteoli original, "Face Of Jesus," which follows a prisoner to his date with death (with Janna once again on harmony).
One of two standout tracks on Weary Blues is their amazing cover of Lefty Frizzell's "Be With You Always." This one stopped me dead in my tracks the minute it came on- the vocals sound uncannily like the ghost of Lefty himself, and a time or two, eerily like a young Merle Haggard.
The Weary Boys, with their ferocious energy and obvious passion of the music they play, make the old time treasures sound fresh and newly relevant.
