The first weather forecasts derived this way used barotropic (that means, single-vertical-level) models, and could successfully predict thelarge-scale movement of midlatitude Rossby waves, that is, the pattern of atmospheric lows and highs.
But evenwithout consideration of anecdotal evidence of trying to use weather modification as a "weapon" (such as the supposed cloud seeding by US troops during the Vietnam conflict), it is clear that unilateral weather modificationmay lead to political tensions.
Particularly in Europe, which may see an increase inextreme weather events as it already has in the 1990s, the population must be educated topay closer attention to severe weather warnings or information about other detrimental health factors such as high tropospheric ozone concentration or highlevels of UV radiation.

 Weather_Intro
Weather in any region is influenced by the atmospheric changes that occur when masses of air with contrasting properties interact.
Weather experienced over much of the central and eastern U.S. is the result of the west-to-east migration of regional-scale low pressure systems, termed mid-latitude cyclones, and their associated warm and cold fronts.
The current NWS mission is to provide "weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy...".

Work-Related Pilot Fatalities in Agriculture --- United States, 1992--2001
Fatality rates based on flight hours for 2000 were calculated by using estimates reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of hours flown in aerial applications and all other types of flights.
Of the 141 fatalities, 100 (71%) were in fixed-wing aircraft, 22 (16%) were in helicopters, and 19 (13%) were in unknown aircraft types.
Not all fatalities occurred among pilots; in addition, 31 agricultural workers died as farm workers, farmers, passengers, ground crew, or mechanics and were not included among the 141 pilots/navigators described in this report.

Motor vehicle fatality rates were not examined among African Americans or other racial or ethnic groups because of the small number of deaths, which accounted for only 3% of New Mexico's population over the study period.
An examination of the percentage of fatalities in alcohol-related crashes across the 5 years (as shown in Table 4) indicates that, during that period, the percentage of all fatalities stemming from alcohol-related crashes was reduced for all ethnic groups.
As can be seen for the fatalities in every ethnic group, individuals who were not wearing their safety belts were more likely to be in an alcohol-related crash than were those who wore belted.

Of the 28 fatalities with BFT as the major cause of death, surveys indicated 89% were in structures with floors or foundations that likely went airborne.
We are unable to construct any explanation for the apparent paradox related to warning awareness and compliance heightened by heavy TV severe weather coverage among those we surveyed in the Birmingham area, with that of the "numbing effect" reported from heavy TV coverage among survivors of other events.

In March 1996, an 86-year-old woman in Tennessee went outside of her home to check the weather and was fatally mauled by two rottweilers owned by a neighbor; the dogs had attacked and injured the woman 1 month before the fatal attack.
Fatal attacks were reported from 14 states (California [four deaths]; Florida and Pennsylvania [three each]; Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, and South Dakota [two each); and Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and Washington [one each]).
The numerator for such rates requires complete ascertainment of deaths and an accurate determination of the breed involved, and the denominator requires reliable breed-specific population data (i.e., number of deaths involving a given breed divided by number of dogs of that breed).
