Topic: Web syndication

Web syndication - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Web syndication is a form of syndication in which a section of a website is made available for other sites to use.
The prevalence of web syndication is also of note to online marketers, since web surfers are becoming increasingly wary of providing personal information for marketing materials (such as signing up for a newsletter) and expect the ability to subscribe to a feed alternatively.
The two main families of web syndication formats are RSS and Atom.

 Syndication
Syndication is the practice of selling rights to the presentation of television programs, especially to more than one customer such as a television station, a cable channel, or a programming service such as a national broadcasting system.
The price for a syndicated television series is determined by its success with audiences and the number and type of "run" in which the program appears.
In barter syndication an advertiser purchases in advance all or some part of the advertising opportunities (commercial spots) in a syndicated program, no matter where the production is to be seen in any run.

RDF is usually expressed in XML, a general purpose web standard for structured data exchange through text files.
RSS 1.0, through RDF, supports using standard vocabularies, invented and agreeed upon by the web community at large, to describe content in more detail; in particular, most Independent Media Centers make heavy use of the Dublin Core, which is a standard set of useful metadata fields one can add to RDF items.
By adhering to web standards, IMC geeks across the world have been able to build a decentralized network of computers and codebases which nevertheless are capable of interacting with each other and sharing information.

XML Syndication is a form of electronic broad-based publishing—meaning “distributed to many people.” Publications released in one of the many XML Syndication formats are called “feeds.” Visitors to web sites offering feeds can subscribe to the feeds using an application called a Desktop Reader.
The way XML Syndication functions is completely different from e-mail, but it serves a similar purpose of allowing publishers to distribute the content to a massive audience.
Syndication Studio is much more cost-effective than any other method to implement XML Syndication, while maintaining the ease of use of a word processor.

 syndication - a definition from Whatis.com
In general, syndication is the supply of material for reuse and integration with other material, often through a paid service subscription.
In the early days, online content syndication was a cumbersome manual process: after an agreement had been reached between the supplier and their customers, the customers would simply copy the desired content from the supplier's Web site and paste it into their own.
Two crucial components for the further development of the industry built on online syndication have been cited as: the need for a standardized data exchange mechanism, and the need for a standardized metadata vocabulary (since suppliers and subscribers are often using different and incompatible technologies).
