This was possible because the transition to WeBWorK was gradual, and the course is coordinated to ensure a common syllabus as well as a common final exam.
WeBWorK immediately tells students if their answers are correct, but does not tell them the correct answers.
To estimate this relationship, it is convenient to express the WeBWorK score as a fraction T (from 0 to 1) rather than as TOTAL, which is a percentage.

At the University of Rochester WeBWorK is currently being used for the precalculus and calculus cluster and for first semester calculus.
WeBWorK builds on the experiences of an earlier program, CAPA, developed at Michigan State University, differing mainly in its use of a new generation of electronic technology to accomplish its purpose.
The WeBWorK system responds telling the student whether an answer (or set of answers) is correct or incorrect and also records whether the student answered the question correctly or incorrectly.

The WebWork development team (Jason and I) have been working with the Struts development team (Don Brown and Ted Husted) and have come to the conclusion that the best thing for Java community would be to merge WebWork in to Struts.
WebWork 2.2 is still coming out any day now, and there may even be a WebWork 2.3.
With the merger of WebWork and Struts now it is crystal clear that our beloved (not to speak bad about the dead) java web framework is no more with us.

Simon Brown's Blog: Comparing webapp frameworks : WebWork
Like Struts, WebWork is a framework that is fairly established within the J2EE webapp space although it's interesting that I've only ever come across two types of WebWork users - those that have never heard of it and those that love it.
WebWork, like most other frameworks, is designed around the web MVC pattern and uses the command and controller implementation strategy.
All in all, WebWork is a very sophisticated web application framework that lets you build easily testable actions and provides a way for you to use multiple view technologies.

WeBWorK's philosophy as a homework generation and delivery system is one of creating a unique problem set for each user of the system.
Note that the grading of a test/quiz is slightly different from that in a homework set: WeBWorK's homework philosophy is that any submission or preview is recorded, and seeing if a problem is correct or not by submitting is equivalent in many respects to previewing it.
For a test/quiz, there is a difference between the actual submission and the previewing cycle (not least because we don't want to show the correct solution until the submission).

In turn, if those components require other components to be initialized and set for their own use, those initializations take place at the time the ComponentInterceptor intercepts the action as well.
