Webb's weakness for gaudy ornaments of his wealth, as well as his reluctance to break away from hardcore honky tonk, meant that he had neither supporters in the industry, nor the ability to sustain the ever-changing tastes of a popular audience.
Webb signed under his own name, while his wife was signed for duets with her husband under the name Betty Jane and Her Boyfriends.
At the same time, Pierce was growing tired of being confined to the Grand Ole Opry -- he thought he wasn't being treated with the respect a star of his stature deserved, and he wanted to be able to partake in the lucrative financial rewards that came with touring.

Born Webb Michael (or Mike) Pierce in West Monroe, Louisiana, five years earlier than his publicists generally claimed, he grew up with the music of Jimmie Rodgers, Gene Autry, western swing bands of Texas and Oklahoma, and the Cajun bands of his native state.
By then, Webb Pierce was better known for his Curtiswood Lane home and its guitar-shaped swimming pool—a regular stop on bus tours of Nashville--than for new hit records, but soon peace-loving neighbors went to court and took even that away from him.
In 1982 Willie Nelson asked Pierce to sing with him on a remake of “In the Jailhouse Now.” It was Pierce’s ninety-sixth and last charted record, although young traditionalist Ricky Skaggs revived two of Pierce’s hits in that decade: “I Don't Care” (1982) and “I'm Tired” (1987).

Webb Pierce's double aught twang was a bit much for a lot of people, especially "countrypolitan" record producers like Chet Atkins.
Pierce starts most of his songs "dry" - that is, he strums a chord on his gee-tar, starts singing and the band ultimately joins in.
Webb grows increasingly comfortable on camera as time goes by -- he starts out in '54 looking stiff as a board; within a couple of years he's learned how to smile and even sway a bit while he twinkles at the camera.

Willie Nelson/Webb Pierce: In the Jailhouse Now
Webb Pierce was one of the most successful country artists of all times.
The career of this "ultimate honky-tonk singer" peaked in the 1950's and early '60's, when Webb Pierce was extremely popular among C&W fans, racking up more number one hits than similar artists like Hank Williams, Eddy Arnold, Lefty Frizzell, and Ernest Tubb.
Pierce -- with his lavish, flamboyant Nudie suits -- became the most recognizable face of country music, as well as all of its excesses; after all, he boasted about his pair of convertibles lined with silver dollars and his guitar-shaped swimming pool.

In fact, Webb Pierce's incredible dorkiness is the other thing which attracts me to him.
The way some folks tell it, Webb could be kind of a jerk -- he shamelessly exploited songwriters, insisting on writing credits in exchange for optioning a song, and he would rush out competing versions of hot new singles when other singers had beat him to the punch.
Like other old-time Decca stars such as Ernest Tubb, Webb Pierce was dumped by MCA in the early 1970s, as the label shifted gears towards a more modern sensibility.

If that's your reaction (and it probably should be by now) to hearing about a tribute to honky-tonk legend Webb Pierce, you can let out a sigh of relief.
