Blog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Enhancements to weblog technology continue to be developed, such as the TrackBack feature introduced by Movable Type in 2002 and subsequently adopted by other software companies to enable automatic notification between websites of related content—such as a post on a particular topic or one which responds to a post on another blog [6].
Some weblogs specialize in particular forms of presentation, such as images (see web comics), or videos (see videoblog), or on a particular theme, and portmanteaus have been coined for some of these, such as moblogs (for "mobile" blog).
Weblogs and Journalism in the Age of Participatory Media by Rebecca Blood argues that blogging is best understood as a form of personal publishing that is more often "participatory media" than journalism.

Weblogs - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Because links are so important to weblogs, most blogs have a way of archiving older entries and generating a static address for individual entries; this static link is referred to as a permalink.
Thoughtful weblogs of course blur into personal weblogs on one side and topical or political ones on the other, but are distinct enough to constitute a category of their own.
Some weblogs specialise in particular forms of presentation, such as images (see web comics), or videos (see videoblog), or on a particular theme, and acronyms have been developed for some of these, such as moblogs (for "mobile" blog).

rebecca blood :: weblogs: a history and perspective
Indeed, the format of the typical weblog, providing only a very short space in which to write an entry, encourages pithiness on the part of the writer; longer commentary is often given its own space as a separate essay.
Weblog editors sometimes contextualize an article by juxtaposing it with an article on a related subject; each article, considered in the light of the other, may take on additional meaning, or even draw the reader to conclusions contrary to the implicit aim of each.
I strongly believe in the power of weblogs to transform both writers and readers from "audience" to "public" and from "consumer" to "creator." Weblogs are no panacea for the crippling effects of a media-saturated culture, but I believe they are one antidote.

Salon Technology | Fear of links   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Weblogs, typically, are personal Web sites operated by individuals who compile chronological lists of links to stuff that interests them, interspersed with information, editorializing and personal asides.
A good weblog is updated often, in a kind of real-time improvisation, with pointers to interesting events, pages, stories and happenings elsewhere on the Web.
Since weblogs are usually one-person operations with no editorial hierarchy or institution to say "no" or impose a house style, they tend to embody the strengths and weaknesses of any labor-of-love operation: They're often impassioned and sometimes sloppy; they frequently surprise and just as frequently lose focus.

 FAQ: Weblog resources
A weblog (sometimes called a blog or a newspage or a filter) is a webpage where a weblogger (sometimes called a blogger, or a pre-surfer) 'logs' all the other webpages she finds interesting.
The format is normally to add the newest entry at the top of the page, so that repeat visitors can catch up by simply reading down the page until they reach a link they saw on their last visit.
Weblogs don't replace the function of publishing articles, but they do replace the function of publishing tables of contents, which for commercial zines have to hype their content dishonestly, and can't normally highlight good articles in other sources.

In MT 2.64, users and administrators run Blacklist manually to remove all the comments that contain “questionable content.” Because of such manual execution, spam messages are not eliminated until they make their way onto weblogs to taint our visiting experience.
Once a comment passes the Blacklist examination and arrives at the “comments” inbox on the weblog management page, authors of that particular weblog can view the comment and then decide whether to approve it or not:
