Goodbye Webmonkey, by Jeffrey Veen   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Webmonkey also gave me a chance to experiment with what a Web site could do, and how they could be produced.
webmonkey the site that started it all for me, a kid wanting to make something online, i'm 17 now (although considered by some as still a "kid"), i have my own domain (right now, in a slight hiatus) - and webcoding is something which, in as much of my free time as possible, i do.
Webmonkey was the first and usually only resource I went to for learning.

 Wired News: Webmonkey, RIP: 1996 – 2004
Webmonkey, the site that turned humble Web developers into attention-grabbing authors, said last week it is closing down following a round of layoffs in the U.S. division of its parent company, Terra Lycos (also the parent company of Wired News).
Enter Webmonkey: A series of how-to articles and techie opinion columns written not by professional writers, but by the lowly geeks building Wired's websites.
Webmonkey was a gift box of everything the more professional publications wouldn't give them: a backstage pass to the epicenter of dot-com trend setting, a spotlight for talented underlings, and the ability to express a personal point of view.

Webmonkey is alive and kicking, serving up new articles all hot-n-fresh like a stack of banana pancakes.
Word is that Webmonkey will be folded into Wired News in the same way Animation Express was.
From what I heard, there was kind of an outcry about Webmonkey leaving (used the time to see what was going on, establish a system, etc), so the powers that be did see that people were looking at the site, and they could track the numbers.

The navigation system on the new Monkey was probably the one thing we've struggled with the most, and is something that will be evolving quickly in the coming weeks.
Webmonkey is still built largely in BBEdit and vi.
Webmonkey, I think, should be the testbed for new Web publishing ideas, both editorially and in how we build the site.

In addition to altering its presentation of content, the "new" Webmonkey site generally seems to be moving away from the concept of clear "navigation" and into a state of confusion.
The original Webmonkey seemed to be a labor of love mixed with exuberant brilliance.
It was the beginning of the end of Webmonkey, because they became weighted towards corporate methods, and increasingly less considerate towards their community.

I got my first writing break at Webmonkey in 1997 (not counting MIT's The Tech and a few letters to the editor at the WSJ), and was discovered there by editors from national and international print magazines.
