Topic: Webometrics

  Webometrics and the SOEIS
The situation in webometrics appears to be quite different because of the relative minor importance of the aging effects on the rather restricted observation time period of the web resources.
In this way, we have done a first exploration of webometrics, which is described in the subsequent sections.
In these webometric case studies, our data from the web were processed by two different statistical methods.

Webometrics, Bibliometrics and Informetrics Being a global document network initially developed for scholarly use (Berners-Lee & Cailliau, 1990) and now inhabited by a diversity of users, the Web constitutes an obvious research area for bibliometrics, scientometrics and informetrics.
Webometrics and cybermetrics are currently the two most widely adopted terms in Information Science, often used as synonyms.
The principal drawback from a webometric perspective is that log files typically cover one site/or all sites owned by the same server and are often restricted access and so are generally not a good data source for studying use of other people’s web sites.

CALL FOR PAPERS *********************************** JASIST Special Issue on Webometrics *********************************** Submission deadline June 30, 2003 The next Special Topics Issue of Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (JASIST) is scheduled to come out in late 2004 on the topic of webometrics.
Webometrics, the quantitative study of web phenomena, encompasses a variety of types of research, some of which date back to the early years of the Web although the widespread adoption of the term itself is relatively new.
It is envisaged that future progress of webometrics will prove the Web to be one of the most valuable mainstream data sources for information science.

Terms applied to this new area of study include "webometrics" (Almind & Ingwersen, 1997), and "cybermetrics" (the title of a journal).
A key to webometric studies has been the use of large-scale search engines, such as AltaVista and AlltheWeb that allow measurements to be made of the total number of pages in a web site and the total number of backlinks to the web site.
A number of studies have been published, establishing the concept of webometrics (Larson, 1996; Almind & Ingwersen, 1997; Rousseau, 1997; Smith & Thelwall, 2002; Björneborn, 2004; Björneborn & Ingwersen, 2004).

Since the mid-1990s has emerged a new research field, webometrics, investigating the nature and properties of the Web drawing on modern informetric methodologies.
The article attempts to point to selected areas of webometric research that demonstrate interesting progress and space for development as well as to some currently less promising areas.
Concluding the article, new directions of webometrics are outlined for performing knowledge discovery and issue tracking on the Web, partly based on bibliometric methodologies used in bibliographic and citation databases.

As webometrics starts integrating more bibliometric methods, the user will be introduced to a greater community of scholarship within the information science discipline.
As scholarship grows within the discipline, the recipients of the wealth of information will only then go on to conduct their own research, and be added into the database of growing knowledge that will continue to flourish and prosper through the future.
