  New Georgia Encyclopedia: Webster County
On December 16, 1853, Webster County, in the southwestern part of the state, was carved out of Lee and Stewart counties to become Georgia's 103rd county.
In the early years of Webster County, with its fertile soils and numerous creeks, cotton was king.
The major employers in the county are the Tolleson Lumber Company, Cooper Lighting, and the Webster County Board of Education.

 Webster County History
Webster County was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on January 10, 1860 from parts of Braxton, Nicholas and Randolph counties.
Because of its isolation and the lack of main roads connecting it to other settlements, Webster County was one of the last counties in the state to be settled.
The act creating the county in 1869 specified that the county seat was to be called Addison, in honor of Addison McLaughlin who had donated the land where the county courthouse was to be built.

County government offices are housed in the Webster County Courthouse, located in the center of the public square in Marshfield.
County offices actually started moving out of the second structure after the building was condemned by an engineering firm in 1930.
The present day Webster County Courthouse is a four-level structure, which houses county offices, a museum of Webster County History and the Webster County Sheriff's Department and Jail.

The Byway is a 10.4-mile section of West Virginia State Route 20, extending from the foot of Hodam Mountain, at the junction of Hodam Creek Road (Webster County Route 20/8) to the Upshur/Webster County line, just north of Cleveland.
The Backway follows Webster County (WC) Route 3, a bit north of the Hacker Valley Post Office to WC Route 1/1, which it follows to WC Route 1; it then follows WV Route 1 to its juncture with WV State Route 20 about one mile south of Cleveland.
