Websters Medical Dictionary -- Recommendations and Resources   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Upon Webster's death in 1843, the unsold books and all rights to the copyright and name "Webster" were purchased by brothers George and Charles Merriam, who then hired Webster's son-in-law Chauncey A. Goodrich, a professor at Yale College, to oversee revisions.
Other dictionaries have ''direct'' links to N.W.'s work, due to the fact that their ancestor dictionaries were based on his work as much as were ''Merriam's''.
It seems to me it would be best to consolidate the second and third material at Webster's Dictionary, because it is the familiar name and it would put the history of the work, which has appeared under several names in one spot; then put in redirects under the other names.

A further noted weakness of the dictionary is that a significant number of words fail to provide an example of its use in a sentence.

The 1998 10th edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary marks the 100th anniversary of this distinguished and popular reference standard, and this is more than just an interesting statistic--it means that Merriam-Webster brings years of experience and reams of citation files to the creation of this latest edition.
Improving on their last dictionary, they've added more than 100 pictorial illustrations and supplemented the synonym paragraphs with examples.
All this makes it a valuable reference--detailed enough for editors and writers, accessible enough for students and casual definition seekers, updated with the new vocabulary of technology, and rigorous enough for the linguistic perfectionists.
