Topic: Wedding Preparations in the Country

  21. First Preparations before a Wedding. Post, Emily. 1922. Etiquette
Or, at a smaller wedding, there is a private marriage in a little chapel, or the clergyman reads the service at the house of the bride in the presence of her parents and his and a small handful of guests, who all sit down afterwards at one table for a wedding breakfast.
No matter whether a wedding is to be large or tiny, there is one unalterable rule: the reception must be either at the house of the bride’s parents or grandparents or other relative of hers, or else in assembly rooms rented by her family.
If a wedding is being held in the country, or where most of the bridesmaids or ushers come from a distance, and they are therefore stopping at the bride’s house, or with her neighbors, there is naturally a “dinner” in order to provide for the visitors.

 Wedding customs — Virtual Finland
Religious wedding ceremonies are usually held in a church or chapel but they sometimes take place in private homes or at the place of the wedding reception.
The wedding no longer means the start of a relationship between a couple but rather its culmination, a fresh stimulus in an everyday life that may have become routine.
The number of wedding guests may be as high as in an old country wedding but instead of villagers and relatives the guests are now the couple’s immediate family and contemporaries.

In conclusion don't let anyone intimidate you by making wedding planning seem more complicated than it is. A lot of the people who emphasize the stresses, costs, and frustrations of planning are either selling something, or they have been heavily influenced by those who are.
We have seen lots of our couples plan wonderful weddings without suffering tremendous stress, without going into years of debt, without having horrible fights with their future spouses-- and without losing sight of the reason they are doing all of this in the first place.

So that it can make us happy, as you put it?
Good God, we'd be just as happy if we had no books at all; books that make us happy we could, in a pinch, also write ourselves.
What we need are books that hit us like a most painful misfortune, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, that make us feel as though we had been banished to the woods, far from any human presence, like a suicide.
