At school they were regarded by their teachers and fellow students alike as stupid and retarded, and were taunted by the clothing they wore which was ragged or ill fitting.
Those migrants who came to California during the 1930s and 1940s are coming back to where it all began and many who revisit the Weedpatch Camp say they find their visit a "cleansing experience." Today they are proud to be called "Okies."

California's Weedpatch Camp, which was settled by 300 West Coast-bound migrant workers in the mid-1930s and was the setting for John Steinbeck's 1940 novel, The Grapes of Wrath, is one of only 17 remaining Works Progress Administration labor camps.
This year there was added cause for celebration: Weedpatch is in the midst of a $500,000, multi-year restoration.
In late 2001, work began on several of the camp's dilapidated wood-frame buildings, including a community hall, post office, library, and tenant cabins.

CoLab concluded their final days in Weedpatch with an audio visual installation ‘Meanings Significado’ that was presented at two different events, in Lamont Library as a plenary and the Migrant Headstart Building in Weedpatch as a celebration for the community.
Each resident was given an audio cd containing all the stories in different languages, the cover of which was carefully designed to open up and reveal more, echoing the project experience over the 4 weeks.
