Weekend Update was created by original anchor Chevy Chase, and appeared on the first SNL broadcast on October 11, 1975.
His stint as "Weekend Update" anchor ended in controversy in 1997, when he was sacked upon the insistence of NBC West-Coast Executive Don Ohlmeyer, who, ironically, had earlier pushed Lorne to put MacDonald behind the WU desk in 1994.

Infinite Monkeys: "Weekend Update" Update: Tina Fey is still hot
In the last several seasons, Weekend Update has again been a regular highlight of the show, and Jimmy Fallon's departure at the end of last year made me wonder if we were in for another "Update slump".
Poehler was a little nervous during her first "Update" outing, but she and Fey seem to have good chemistry, and they both joked about both Poehler's nervousness and the fact that now that Jimmy was gone, she would have to be Tina's new love interest.
As is typical for SNL, a few of the sketches fell flat, but on balance it was a very entertaining season premiere, with cameo appearances from both Alec Baldwin (who interrupted Affleck's monologue to accuse him of "stealing his moves") and James Gandolfini, who was a guest on Weekend Update as his Tony Soprano character.

His novels, such as Never Come Morning (1942), The Man with the Golden Arm (1949), and A Walk on the Wild Side (1956), are brutally realistic.
His newspaper sketches and books attracted attention for their racy and slangy idiom and for the humor and shrewdness with which they delineated people of the Midwestern scene.

In the mid-eighties, Miller was bumped up to the major leagues of comedy when he was "discovered" by Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels, who caught the comedian's act at The Comedy Store in L.A. one night, and subsequently invited him to join the cast.
He delivered the news of the week with acerbic fury, and by the end of his report, after he had signed off with a trademark pen flourish across his copy and an "I am outta here," viewers didn't feel quite the same about being American.
Miller's eviscerating topical harangues are notorious for their biting cynicism, intelligence (he takes his vocabulary-building word-of-the-day calendar very seriously), and liberal peppering of cultural esoterica.

During the Weekend Update sketch, Tina Fey -- who I could not love and adore more even if she sent a check out to me each week -- did a smart bit on media hot topic of the moment -- a woman's fertility rate.
The focus placed by so many reporters on that one sentence that so clearly does not take note of the varying factors by which the decision to not make babies while simultaneously busting through the corporate glass ceiling is an insult to just about anyone who has had to face those cold, painful statistics.
Fey's sketch so beautifully and sharply addressed some of these factors that I would do a serious disservice to try and recall them all.
