  New Georgia Encyclopedia: Boll Weevil
weevil greatly affected Georgia's long history of cotton production between 1915, when the insect was introduced to Georgia, and the early 1990s, when it was eliminated as an economic pest.
The adult boll weevil measures from three to eight millimeters from the tip of the snout to the abdomen, which is half the length of its body.
Upon hatching, the boll-weevil larvae or grubs feed in the square, causing it to be shed by the plant or rendering the bolls unsuitable for harvest.

The weevils have been so bad at times that the pecans from this area were severely discounted until there was not even a price offer for them.
When the weevil bores a hole into a developing nut that is still in liquid or gel stage, the nut will abort and can be found on the ground within three days of being punctured.
Weevil damage as represented by the nuts on the ground can be distinguished easily from other damage by the "tobacco stains" that developed from the fluids that ran out of the puncture hole.

 Alfalfa Weevil, FC-ENT-0032-00
Thus, the yield impact of weevil feeding on alfalfa declines as alfalfa stand height increases, and decisions to treat alfalfa for weevil should be focused on an alfalfa stand when larvae can be readily found on alfalfa that is 12 inches or less in height.
Whenever weevil activity on an alfalfa stand is being evaluated, it is important that indicators of declining weevil activity be noted, such as the pupation of mature larvae or the decimation of a weevil population by an epizootic of the fungal pathogen.
If few early weevil larvae are present in a sample and pupal cocoons are readily found on the foliage or on the ground, it may be assumed that the peak activity of larval feeding has passed.

 Milfoil Weevil (E. lecontei)
The milfoil weevil lays its eggs on milfoil plants, usually on apical meristems near the water surface (Sheldon and O'Bryan 1996a).
Adult milfoil weevils are approximately 2-3 mm in length and have lived as long as 162 days in captivity (Sheldon and O'Bryan 1996a).
Because the weevil is endemic to North America (Colonelli 1980, O'Brien and Wibmer 1982), and Eurasian watermilfoil probably was not established in North America until the 1940's (Smith and Barko 1990), it is evident that the original host was northern watermilfoil (Creed and Sheldon 1994a, Newman and Maher 1995).

In laboratory tests this boll weevil pheromone was isolated by drawing air from caged males through a column of activated charcoal to which female weevils were quickly attracted.
Yield losses attributed to the boll weevil, the cost of insecticide control, environmental considerations, infestation of secondary insects and insect resistance all have resulted in an aggressive effort to develop a beltwide strategy for controlling the boll weevil in the United States.
In view of the economic and environmental problems posed by the boll weevil and in recognition of the technical advances developed over a period of almost 100 years by hardworking and talented scientists, a cooperative boll weevil eradication experiment was initiated in 1971 in southern Mississippi and in parts of Louisiana and Alabama.

Once the boll weevil is eradicated from an area, growers typically experience an increase in cotton yield of at least 10 percent, significantly more in some areas.
After the boll weevil is eradicated from an area, the need for insecticides is significantly reduced, and in many areas nearly eliminated.
A. The boll weevil is considered the key pest in cotton production because the insecticides that cotton growers use early in the season to control weevils also eliminate many beneficial insects.

In fact, it is plausible that control of root weevils in the nursery with either bifenthrin or nematodes may provide continued benefit in protecting these plants after their installation in the landscape.
Permitting a few weevils to feed on the foliage should not jeopardize the health of established plants, and a small amount of weevil feeding is a sign that the landscape has a healthy, multi-layered ecosystem, complete with prey and predators.

 Sunflower Seed Weevil Management
Growers should start counting adult red sunflower seed weevils when more than half of the plants in the field are in the stage of just showing yellow ray petals (R5.0) to 30 percent of the head shedding pollen (R5.3) and the rest of the plants in the field are still in the bud stage.
Although insecticides applied to sunflower at the bud stage will kill weevils, treatments at that stage are not economical or effective because (1) seeds have not developed to a stage suitable for oviposition, (2) eggs within the weevil are not mature, and (3) adult weevil emergence is still continuing.
Also, the gray sunflower seed weevil does not lay as many eggs as the red sunflower seed weevil, so the economic threshold for the gray is higher than for the red sunflower seed weevil.

History of the Boll Weevil Eradication Program
With Congressional leadership and support, a USDA Boll Weevil Research Lab was created followed by eradication experiments, a trial eradication program and an areawide boll weevil control program on Texas' High Plains and Rolling Plains to prevent the weevil's migration.
The goal is to eradicate the weevil as an economic pest from the U.S. during this decade.
The weevil is still costing growers about $300 million annually, mostly in the Mid-South and in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico where eradication programs are either underway or about to be launched.

Agricultural Research Service boll weevil scientists have almost succeeded in working themselves out of a mission in the best possible way—by having helped to create a program that is closing in on its goal of eradicating the boll weevil from the United States.
Hope for stopping the boll weevil in its beetle tracks was relatively bleak until the 1970s, when research by ARS and universities like Texas AandM, Louisiana State University, Mississippi State University, and others evolved into a complex of tools that had the potential to remove this foreign invader from the country.
The boll weevil eradication program depends primarily on detection and carefully targeted insecticide use, unlike the screwworm program to which it is often compared but which depended on biological control—releasing sterile male insects to prevent reproduction.

 Boll weevil eradication effort
Before boll weevil eradication efforts were initiated, growers in the Hill regions spent approximately twenty to twenty-five dollars per acre on boll weevil control and still suffered yield losses each year.
This means that by approaching boll weevil control in an organized manner, through their boll weevil eradication program, growers in these areas were able to obtain much better control of boll weevils at a cost similar to what they would have had in the absence of an eradication program.
By continuing to monitor every cotton field for boll weevils, reinfestations can be detected early, before they have a chance to spread, and eliminated at a cost of a few thousand dollars, rather than the millions of dollars that would be required if a large area became reinfested.
