Wei Zheng, MD, PhD, of the University of South Carolina, an author of the study, said over-cooking meat by frying or grilling forms dangerous chemical compounds (heterocyclic amines), which are linked to a higher risk of breast cancer.
Zheng agreed more research needs to be conducted and said he is currently working on studies to analyze factors such as genetic history combined with the intake of well- done meat.
Zheng said future studies may have a larger sample size and may analyze the effects of well-done chicken and fish on breast cancer risk.
