A weight function is a mathematical device used when performing a sum, integral, or average in order to give some elements more of a "weight" than others.
Weighted means are commonly used in statistics to compensate for the presence of bias.
In this context, the weight function w(x) is sometimes referred to as a density.

 Dual-function balloon weight - Patent 6422914
Thus, the balloon weight of the present invention is a dual-function balloon weight in that individual balloons may be secured thereto as with common balloon weights and, additionally or alternatively, a multitude of balloons can be attached thereto to provide a balloon bouquet.
Specifically, the invention relates to a balloon weight having at least one attachment point to which balloons may be tied and at least one attachment point to which a bouquet of balloons may be attached to create a decorative balloon display.
Thus, balloon weight 10 can be employed as a common balloon weight wherein balloons are simply tied to an attachment point 18 and base member 12 serves as either a weight for the balloon or balloons or a grip for carrying the balloon or balloons.

Weight smoothing is doing the job it has been asked to do; however, it has not been designed to follow functions with quick transitions.
Weight smoothing was limited when learning the one dimensional step function, so it is expected that the new method will not perform well with the pyramid function.
It is obvious the weights are attempting to remain close in value; however, due to the steep slope of the pyramid function, this forces the weight space to form a staircase shape during training.

 ATLATL WEIGHTS: Function and Classification
Atlatl weights do not possess a sufficient enough mass to significantly influence the speed at which an atlatl is swung in order to affect some degree of timing based on velocity.
The purpose of the atlatl weights mass is to resist acceleration.
Therefore, the atlatl weight is a timing device influencing the amount and rate at which the spring energy of an atlatl is stored and released against the spring energy of a dart.

Atlatl weights do not possess sufficient mass to significantly influence the speed at which an atlatl is swung in order to affect some degree of timing based on velocity.
The purpose of the weights mass is to resist acceleration.
The basic atlatl weight, or Type I in the Perkins' atlatl weight classification, is a single point mass weight with a mass of approximately 65 g.

BBC NEWS | Health | Ex-smokers told to 'weight watch'
Weight gain is an important factor in reducing the beneficial effects of quitting on lung function
There were some expected differences in lung function and weight - current smokers tended to have the biggest decline in lung function over time and people who had given up smoking were more likely to have put on weight.
For women, the corresponding weight gain that would negate the benefit of quitting smoking is 2.43kg per year, they estimate.

Molecular Weight Measurements Using the Zetasizer Nano System — Supplier Data by Malvern
Data collection and calculations were managed using the Molecular Weight function in the DTS software for the Zetasizer Nano system, which compiles the static intensity measurements, generates a standard Debye plot (see example of software screen shot in Figure 4), and then calculates the molecular weight and 2nd virial coefficient.
The molecular weight of BSA measured on the Zetasizer Nano system is 71.4kDa, which is 6.6% larger than the known molecular weight of the 67kDa monomeric form of the protein.
The molecular weight measured by the static light scattering technique used in the Nano system is a weight average molecular weight.

Improvement in upper airway function after weight loss in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
We tested the hypothesis that improvement in OSA after weight loss is associated with improvement in pharyngeal function.
We found that after a 26 +/- 18 kg weight loss, there was a significant reduction in the apnea/hypopnea index from 57 +/- 29 to 14 +/- 10 (p less than 0.0005) and increase in the lowest nocturnal oxygen saturation from 54 +/- 20% to 80 +/- 8% (p less than 0.001).
We conclude that improvement in obstructive sleep apnea after weight loss may be related to improvement in pharyngeal and glottic function.

In what appears to be the first major study to assess the impact of additional weight on ex-smokers’ lungs, researchers from 13 countries, using data from more than 6,600 people in 27 countries found a strong link between the two elements, particularly in men.
Their lung function was measured in 1991-1993, when most were between 20 and 44 years old, and again in 1998-2003.
But the weight gained by ex-smokers had a direct effect on lung function, as measured by the amount of air that could be expelled with each breath.

 Quitting Smoking? Don't Gain Weight
Lung function, weight, body mass index (BMI), and smoking status were noted then and again five to 11 years later.
The biggest yearly weight gain -- about 1.7 pounds per year for men and women - was in people who quit smoking.
The weight gain cut about 38% of the lung function benefit of quitting smoking for men and 17% for women, say Chinn and colleagues.

Controlling Weight Gain Could Improve the Health Benefits of Smoking Cessation
Smoking cessation is beneficial for lung function; however, maximum benefit requires the control of weight gain, especially in men.
The investigators said that when mean change in lung function was adjusted for change in either weight or BMI, a large effect on the difference in lung function between quitters and smokers was observed.
Colditz and Stein emphasized that although lifestyle interventions have proven effective for controlling weight gain, individual efforts must be reinforced by the support of family members, counseling of health care providers, participation in community walking groups and exercise programs at work, and changes in regulations to provide access to safe areas for exercise.

The findings, they say, suggest that a heavier weight in middle age may mean a higher risk of dementia later in life.
And although these study participants were in generally good health, disorders like elevated blood pressure and diabetes could act as a bridge between high BMI and poorer cognitive function.
Regardless of what the impact of weight on dementia risk turns out to be, Cournot said, there are already many reasons to maintain a healthy weight.

Researchers say Seroquel appears to have a positive impact on important domains of cognitive function and appears more effective and better tolerated than the conventional antipsychotic Haldol (haloperidol), in patients classified as partial responders.
In addition, the potential to gain weight and develop diabetes, common side effects of some conventional antipsychotic treatments, may be minimised with the use of Seroquel.
Announced at the meeting was data from a retrospective study that demonstrated the addition of Seroquel to Clozaril (clozapine) treatment has an apparent propensity to induce weight loss and help manage diabetes in patients who gain weight and develop diabetes on clozapine alone.
