Twenty-five years of "Weird Al" Yankovic. - By Sam Anderson - Slate Magazine
Weird Al works, as always, with stock characters: His gangsta is straight out of Boyz n the Hood (gats, bandanas, pimped rides), and his nerd is the same computer-programming Trekkie we've all been making sympathetic fun of since the invention of the microchip.
When Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" MC spits out lyrics, he scowls as menacingly as a grown man with braces possibly can—and that nerd sneer is the essence of Yankovic's comedy.
Weird Al's essential service is to point out that, from the perspective of the middle-class suburban lifeworld, pop culture itself is weird.

about weird al, weird al lyrics, weird al yankovic
Indeed, Weird Al has carved out quite a unique and comfortable niche for himself as the prince of parody pop; no other recording artist has been able to sustain such a long and varied career by satirizing the songs of others.
Al returned in 1999 with Running With Scissors, the first single of which--another Star Wars-themed number called "The Saga Begins," this time set to the tune of Don McLean's "American Pie"--was perfectly timed with the much-hyped theatrical release of both Episode 1: The Phantom Menace and American Pie.
At this point, Al is pretty much an institution unto himself, despite the fact that he recently underwent a radical makeover (he shaved off his distinctive mustache, and ditched his eyeglasses after getting LASIK eye surgery) that rendered him virtually unrecognizable.

IGN: The Weird Al Show - The Complete Series Review
The series was a showcase for Al's bizarre brand of humor, allowing him to hone in on his obsessions such as ill-conceived food concoctions, spam, the pop culture at large and, of course, his beloved pet hamster.
Al also had a group of regular friends that would drop by the cave, such as a super hero, a lady spy and a fashion conscious beauty.
Al's sensibilities naturally translate to children, and the show made the attempt to teach along with giving children the idea of making a pickle and jelly bean sandwich.

Weird Al Yankovic - Music Downloads - Online
Bio: The foremost song parodist of the MTV era, "Weird Al" Yankovic carried the torch of musical humor more proudly and more successfully than any performer since Allan Sherman.
In 1979, the success of the Knack's monster hit "My Sharona" inspired Yankovic to record a parody dubbed "My Bologna"; not only was the song a smash with Demento fans, but it even found favor with the Knack themselves, who convinced their label, Capitol, to issue the satire as a single.
After Michael Jackson's "Beat It" became the most acclaimed video in the medium's brief history, Yankovic recorded "Eat It" for his sophomore effort, 1984's "Weird" Al Yankovic in 3-D; the "Eat It" video, which mocked the "Beat It" clip scene-for-scene, became an MTV smash, and the Grammy-winning single reached the Top 15.

Al is so clean-cut that the producers couldn't find any of the typical angst-laced problems that make many rock stars' stories compelling (as Al noted in an interview with BTM), so their angle was on Al's life as a bachelor and (what they presumed was) his loneliness.

The reason is that Eminem didn't want Al parodying him in a clip for Poodle Hat's first single, "Couch Potato," which spoofs TV culture to the beat of "Lose Yourself." It's the first time an artist Al's parodied hasn't given him permission to do a video, and Al can't help but point out the irony.
Luckily for Weird Al, there were plenty of other artists to pilfer from, and Poodle Hat is rife with rips on artists who've recently occupied the charts, from Avril Lavigne to Nelly to the Backstreet Boys to just about every garage rock band that's been on the verge of breaking through ("Angry White Boy Polka").
Already, Weird Al is casting his net for future targets, eyeing 50 Cent for signs of longevity and Snoop Dogg for his cultural cachet.
