WeirdX handles X window protocol directly, so any proxy programs are not needed on X client side.
WeirdX is also a pure Java X server and it was ramified from the snapshot(March/1999) of WiredX.
Since that ramification, WeirdX has been improved by ymnk in his spare time and he will continue to improve it, because we believe GPL'ed pure Java X server is useful for open source community.

WeirdX is free (and distributed under the GNU GPL) and has a bunch of truly nice features:
WeirdX will not be suitable to execute "heavy" X clients, but you may find that twm, xterm, etc. will run fine on it.
The WeirdX home page has links to ready-to-run (double-clickable) applications for Mac OS and Mac OS X, but they may be a release or two behind the current version; if you really want the latest release, you'll have to work a bit harder.

Weirdx requires java to be installed on your machine.
Once you've verified that weirdx is working properly, close weirdx and oclock and modify the config file (misc/config/props) to enable it to run as a rootless window manager (i.e., x apps appear in their own windows rather than in the weirdx window).
Test that weirdx is running as a rootless window manager: Now when you start weirdx, you won't see a gray window for X programs to run in.

It could be HOBLink X11, eXceed, WeirdX, or even XFree86/2 if you have it...
but the advantage of using HOBLink or WeirdX (or eXceed) is that you can run the GIMP in "windowed" mode like a native PM application.
I recommend using HOBLink if you have it; WeirdX is rather sluggish (I have no personal experience with Hummingbird eXceed).

To setup weirdx, you need to edit the file props which is under the config folder which is inside the misc folder in the folder you unzipped weirdx to.
If you are behind a firewall, you NEED to forward port 6002 to the machine you want to connect with, and enter the remote IP address of the router in the place of your IP.
At this point, you SHOULD be able to issue commands to bring up signalscan or any other X application.

You will need the JRE installed on the Windows machine (get it from Sun's page), weirdx, and an ssh client (I reccomend putty).
Reboot, if you have XPsp2 installed you will have to unblock javaw from accessing the network.
I've used wired weirdx before, it works pretty well.
