Freakonomics Blog » More Welcome Ridicule for Wikipedia
What wikipedia is doing is something never seen before, and you can constantly find better information than in many other similar sources of information, with one important difference: it is FREE.
It is easy to vandalize wikipedia but it is a lot of work to try and build factual looking references to cite so that your vandalism persists because people beleive it.
While wikipedia has much room for improvement the real flaw is in the users not reading it with the proper level of skepticism.

There is no one central point where censorship can be imposed, and therefore censorship by any given group, restriction to "officially reported" sources, or "pushing" of any particular viewpoint, whether official or unofficial, is difficult to achieve and almost always fails after a time.
By the nature of its openness, "edit wars" and prolonged disputes often occur when editors do not agree.[10] A few members of its community have explained its editing process as a collaborative work, a "socially Darwinian evolutionary process"[11], but this is not generally considered by the community to be an accurate self-description.
It may be obviously dirty, so that he knows to exercise great care, or it may seem fairly clean, so that he may be lulled into a false sense of security.

 about wikipedia @ wikipediafan.com
Nupedia had an elaborate system of peer review and required highly qualified contributors, but the writing of articles was seen as very slow.
In particular, older articles tend to be more comprehensive and balanced, while newer articles may still contain significant misinformation, unencyclopedic content, or vandalism.
Users need to be aware of this in order to obtain valid information and avoid misinformation which has been recently added and not yet removed.

 Wikitravel:Welcome, Wikipedians - Wikitravel
Articles in Wikitravel are references for travellers; subjects not directly or indirectly related to travel should be avoided.
For Wikitravel, the traveller comes first; the needs and priorities of others — such as local residents, travel agents, or the local propaganda ministry — are given less weight.
Because one of our goals is to have printable guides that someone can take with them to use at a destination, we tend to try to write articles about a particular city, region or country all in one place.

CJR Daily: In Defense of Wikipedia
I agree that there are a lot of problems with the current wikipedia bashing, but I think many of them are justified based on how it presents itself to the world.
This is probably because people who pursue those interests and are knowledgeable in those fields are not the sort to spend many hours crafting and editing an article on the topic.
Sixthly, as far as I know, none of the so-called "proponents" of Aetherometry (by which "Ta bu shi da yu" means any person who has actually read and thought about it) wanted to "add material uncritically" to the article; instead, they wanted to add it in a manner non-distortive of truth and grammar.
