Northamptonshire (abbreviated Northants or N'hants) is a landlocked county in central England with a population of 629,676 (2001 census).
Northamptonshire has a local BBC radio station, BBC Radio Northampton, which broadcasts on two FM frequencies — 104.2 MHz for the south and west of the county (including Northampton and surrounding area) and 103.6 MHz for the north of the county (including Kettering and Corby).
Northamptonshire is home to a number of football (soccer) teams, notably the professional sides Rushden and Diamonds F.C. and Northampton Town F.C., both of which are currently in Football League Two, although Rushden and Diamonds were relegated at the end of the 2005/2006 season and will play in the Conference for the 2006/2007 season.

The ancient art of lime slaking was brought back to life at Northamptonshire’s Welford Wharf yesterday (Monday 10 October).
Welford Wharf is a popular destination with boaters and walkers, situated just outside the small town of Welford in Northamptonshire.
The kilns’ hey-day was in the early 1800s, when an increased demand for lime by farmers saw limestone being transported along the canals to the kilns, where it was burnt and turned into lime for use as fertiliser on local farms.

Her cottage was one of a row of several small, but warm and sturdy brick cottages fronting directly onto the High Street, and lit by oil lamps, as there was no electricity in the village at that time.
The single hand pump that supplied water for the row of cottages was located in the back yard, as were the toilets in their wooden out-houses.
The outside of the pub in the High Street had changed beyond recognition however inside, it appeared to be much as I remembered it, and the beer was certainly better than the wartime variety.

This pretty spot outside the small town of welford is a popular destination for sunbathers and sketchers, as well as the more usual boaters and walkers.
As demand for lime grew in the early 1800s, barges began transporting more and more limestone along the canal networks to the kilns, where it was burnt, turned into lime and put to use as fertiliser by local farmers.
The seven Welford kilns were built in phases from 1820 and stayed in operation until the early 1930s.
