	River Welland - Definition, explanation
		The River Welland is a river in the east of England, 56 km (35 m) long, and it has been a main waterway across the part of The Fens called "South Holland" for thousands of years.
		It is one of the Fenland rivers which were laid out with washes.
		There are two channels between widely-spaced embankments with the intention that flood waters would have space in which to spread while the tide in the estuary prevented free egress.

		Little used by boats, the Welland is a wide, slow river that flows through the fertile fields of Lincolnshire.
		The canal that ran alongside the river for a while is long derelict, but motor boats start to be seen just after the Deepings, down to Fossdyke Bridge and into the Wash. It’s tidal below Fulney Lock and at spring tides a small tidal bore may be experienced.
		The Welland will form part of the Fens Waterways Link, a new boating route from Boston to Peterborough and Cambridge which is set to attract thousands more visitors to this hidden waterscape.

		The Romans navigated the river between Stamford and Peakirk and the remains of a Roman canal can still be seen.
		Following the floods of 1947, the river was straightened and widened and, in 1953, the Coronation Channel, which is not navigable, was constructed to protect Spalding from floods.

		has been sailing on the river Welland in Spalding, Lincolnshire, for over fifty years with an active membership which holds dinghy racing every Sunday from April until Decmber.
		The River Welland provides competitive, close racing with navigable water for nearly two miles including two bends meaning all aspects of sailing are always available.
