  Wellhead Protection Program
Wellhead protection involves the protection of ground water supplies by eliminating or controlling sources of pollution to the surface and sub-surface area surrounding a water well or wellfield.
A wellhead protection program provides a relatively inexpensive opportunity to protect a public water supply from potential contamination by managing known potential contaminant sources in and around the wellhead protection area.
The South Dakota Wellhead Protection Program was approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 and addresses program items ranging from defining the land area which contributes water to your well or wellfield and identifying potential contaminant sources to planning for future expansion and water supply emergencies.

 Wellhead Protection
Wellhead protection is a program to prevent pollution of groundwater used for public drinking water.
The main reason for implementing a wellhead protection program is to protect the health of people using the water by preventing contamination of the water supply.
Phase one determined the boundaries of the wellhead protection area based on a scientific analysis of what area contributes groundwater to our wells within both one and five year periods.

Wellhead - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A wellhead is that part of an oil well which terminates at the surface, whether on land or offshore, where petroleum or gas hydrocarbons can be withdrawn.
A wellhead consists of the spools, valves, and other components which contain the pressure within the well.
A classical wellhead, round or sometimes square, set round a well opening to keep people from falling in, is termed by classicists a puteal.

Short wellhead plug - Patent 5509476
The wellhead plug assembly as recited in claim 9, wherein a minimum interior diameter of a wellhead bore into which said wellhead plug assembly locks is greater than one and one-half inches.
The expensive nature of the constituent materials of the wellhead and the fact that a segment of the wellhead is dependent upon the length of the plug precipitates a common goal in wellhead plug design which is minimizing the length of the plug to reduce construction costs of the wellheads.
The top wellhead plug 110, however, differs from the bottom plug 108 in that the expander sleeve 78b is wedge shaped for ramped sliding engagement with an interior inclined surface of the key 64.

Florida DEP Ground Water - Wellhead Protection
A Wellhead Protection Area is defined as the surface and subsurface area surrounding a public water supply well, through which contaminants are reasonably likely to move toward and reach the well.
The Wellhead Protection Rule establishes a 500-foot radius circular Wellhead Protection Area around all wells which serve community and non-transient non-community public water systems.
Differing levels of protection may be established within the wellhead protection area commensurate with the capacity of the well and an evaluation of the risk to human health and the environment.

Project Profile: Demonstrating Benefits of Wellhead Protection Programs #2778
This study was designed to (1) identify the key elements of wellhead protection programs, (2) identify the costs to develop and implement local wellhead protection programs, and (3) compile a list of benefits of wellhead protection programs and develop a generic method to measure and quantify those benefits.
Wellhead protection programs are developed to protect public groundwater supplies from contamination, ensure public health, and prevent the need for expensive treatment of groundwater supplies to comply with drinking water standards.
Local wellhead protection programs generally consist of five elements: (1) a planning team, (2) delineation of wellhead protection areas, (3) a contaminant source inventory, (4) a management plan or management strategies, (5) an emergency response contingency plan, and (6) public participation.

 Indiana’s Wellhead Protection Rule
Wellhead protection is a process by which the groundwater used as drinking water can be protected from contamination by protecting the area nearest the supply wells from potential hazards.
The Indiana Wellhead Protection Rule requires public water supply systems to "complete an inventory of all potential sources of contamination (regulated and non-regulated) within the wellhead protection area." The only specific procedure required is a search of existing databases of regulated sources (explained in Step 3 of this guide).

Public notice of the initial meeting to form the wellhead protection team is required to be placed in the newspaper of largest general circulation at least 48 hours before the meeting.
Wellhead protection planning is not intended to burden citizens with regulations, but to guide them through the process of collecting and organizing information that is necessary to protect their drinking water from contamination.

Wellhead Protection (WHP) Program Guidance Document - Introduction
This document represents Wyoming's Wellhead Protection (WHP) plan, and is intended to serve as a guideline to communities, Public Water Systems (PWSs; See Glossary), and others wishing to develop local WHP plans that will meet the minimum criteria for approval by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WDEQ) and the EPA.
WDEQ has identified the development of a state Wellhead Protection Plan as its primary means to meet this objective; this document is intended to provide such assistance.
Public participation in the development of this plan also was solicited through press releases distributed to local and statewide newspapers, informing the public of the establishment of the Wellhead Protection Advisory Committee and its role(s), and encouraging interested parties to respond with comments, ideas and suggestions to the draft elements of the state's proposed plan.
