The school was founded in 1859 by the Duke of Wellington for the purpose of providing education for the sons of army officers, and a trust was set up to pay the costs of the education of sons of soldiers killed in battle.
Historically, Wellington College acted as a feeder school for Sandhurst, and certainly in my day, the "CCF" (Combined Cadet Force) was regarded as an important part of the school's curriculum (in which I was a singular failure!).
College was divided into Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools; the Middle and Upper split between the Classical and Mathematical sides, the latter heavily predominant.

Joseph Firth was born in Wellington, New Zealand, on 25 March 1859, the son of Aaron Firth, a stonemason from the north of England, and his wife, Ann Priestnell.
When Joseph Mackay of Nelson was appointed headmaster of Wellington College in 1881, he brought young Firth over as a junior master; a number of pupils joined this migration, and Firth's influence did much to ensure their comfortable assimilation.
In previous years Wellington College had lurched from one crisis to another; a board of governors composed of otherwise distinguished citizens had failed to achieve financial stability, and all Firth's predecessors had left under difficult circumstances.

In early 2004 a group of six Queen Margaret girls along with eight Wellington College boys from Wellington New Zealand represented New Zealand for the first time at the International Schools United Nations Conference which was held in New York.
As part of the Yong Enterprise competition in Wellington, a group of senior girls persuaded top Wellington designers to lend their gowns; they organised music, security and even provided food for their models, selected from the senior classes at Queen Margaret.
At the other end of the spectrum, four girls along with four boys from Wellington College, on the first attempt at the competition, made the final ten to compete in a week of physical and mental challenges at the Outdoor Pursuit Centre in the centre of the North Island.
