 Michigan Historical Marker: Burt Opera House / Wellington R. Burt
In 1888, this settlement was named in honor of Wellington R. Burt, the lumber tycoon who arranged for the Cincinnati, Saginaw and Mackinaw Railroad to run through this village.
Local resident Sarah A. Miller gave the land with a deed stipulating that any structure built be used for "education, social and wholesome amusements, and meetings," and public gatherings dedicated to "free thought, free speech and good government." Townspeople contributed labor and additional funds for the erection of this hall, dedicated in 1891.
Wellington R. Burt (1831-1919) was a Saginaw business, civic leader and philanthropist.

Wellington R. Burt was a very vindictive man. He sometimes gave a lot, but more often gave too little.
Burt was born in Genessee County's Pike Township in Western New York state on August 26, 1831, not far from Rochester.
All of his money was put into an account at Second National Bank and was not to be distributed until twenty-one years after the last survivors of his two grandchildren, Wellington Burt Hay, and Wellington R. Burt III died ("Millions Beckon Heirs").

The Michigan Dyslexia Institute, Inc. (MDI) was established as a nonprofit educational organization in October 1982 to serve the more than one-half million children and adults with dyslexia in the state.
MDI is the only private organization to be awarded state grants to train public school teachers to teach students with dyslexia, and the only one to be formally recognized by the Michigan Legislature for its educational and service contributions to Michigan’s citizens with dyslexia.
With funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, MDI was a major contributor in efforts to develop a model program in the Upper Peninsula in the Marquette Schools and model programs in Calhoun County, in cooperation with the Calhoun County Reading Council and the Calhoun County Intermediate School District.

    An early settler of Wright Township was William Brewster, a descendent of Elder William Brewster, a well-known member of the band of pilgrims on the “Mayflower”.
    The History of Hillsdale County, Michigan in 1879 indicates that the oldest village is in the south part of the township, and the postal record establishes the name as South Wright, as of November 2, 1855, then the name was changed to Waldron on May 21, 1877.
