		The dam is 1,560 feet long along its crest, 300 feet thick at the base and 25 feet thick at the top.
		Although the dam was not dedicated until 1966, it was able to begin blocking the flow of the river in 1963.
		Owing to this dam, there had not been the periodic flooding that would wash away and renew sand banks along that portion of the Colorado River that transited the (The enormous gorge of the Colorado River in northern Arizona) Grand Canyon.

		There is consensus that Wells Dam, upriver from Rocky Reach, has the best design for fish passage on the Columbia -- by default because physcial constraints dictated the design at this facility.
		At Wells, juvenile salmon pass directly over the dam without having to be diverted to another route for passage.
		Also, Wells' generator turbines operate parallel, instead of perpendicular, to the flow of the river and the turbine intakes are below the level where fish pass through spillway gates.

		YAKIMA — The Douglas County Public Utility District and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Indian Reservation announced an agreement yesterday in a nearly two-year dispute involving payment for use of tribal land near Wells Dam.

		Methow Salmon Hatchery manager Bob Jateff said he is hopeful about the number of three-year-old hatchery-raised Chinook that have been taken at Wells Dam as they made their way up the Columbia River.
		Crews at Wells Dam began collecting the returning salmon in early May, trucking them to the Winthrop Hatchery in a tank truck.
		The rest were allowed to pass through the fish ladders at Wells to proceed up into the Methow watershed on their own power.
