Wines from Austria - Freshly pressed / Article A la carte - Welschriesling - A Multi Talent   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Welschriesling wines with between 12.5, 13.5 or even 14 percent alcohol tend to loose their animating freshness without gaining in complexity or expressiveness.
In addition to this Welschriesling is a late ripener which, in poor years at least, presents some risk for the winemakers.
In Styria, despite all this, Welschriesling enjoys the reputation reserved for the Grüner Veltliner in regions like Lower Austria: it is the foundation of the Buschenschank, the country inn, and for daily consumption.

International Recipes OnLine: Food and Wine Dictionary: Welschriesling
Welschriesling's origin is a mystery, but it is well suited for the climate of central Europe, where it's extensively cultivated.
It's known as Welshriesling (or Walschriesling) in Austria, Vlassky Riesling in Czechoslovakia, Olaszriesling in Hungary, Riesling Italico in Italy, and Grasevina or Laskiriesling in the former Yugoslavia.
Welschriesling is a high-yielding vine that, in most cases, produces fairly bland wines.
